Post is there a specific type of clay used for kaiju protos???
hi guys sorry again if this is in the wrong section....

but i was wondering if there is a specific type of clay used used for the sculpts/prototypes?

or do toy makers just use whatever they feel like? Like wood, man that crazy!

i just use sculpy and make small silcon molds and cast in resin. i was trying to make my own fight figure a few years ago, but when i baked the sculpy, it started to crack and far apart. so i was wondering if i started up again, maybe it would help if i try to use the same materials as the pros...

so if anyone knows, please let me know! thanks guys!

Yeah I think its what the artist likes and is comfortable with. In the end it really doesn't matter. A lot of people uses sculpy like Gargamel for instance. Then its a coating of Mr. Surfacer. You can get different levels of thickness with it as well as a spray can or bottle option. But with enough coats it will even hide small cracks.

If your getting cracks that's just a baking issue. You just need to get a better feel for you oven and probably shorten your cook times as well as how long before you take it out the oven. With sculpy I found its better the undercook it and than rebake it to harden it further. As well I leaned my oven and what the temapture really was as its an old oven.

All I use is suclpy as well.

I think a lot of Japanese sculptors also use paper clay.
I plan on trying it out myself soon.

one thing I found with sculpy is that using a wire armature can lead to cracking. I think it's a consequence of the wire and sculpy expanding at different rates when baking.

Aves Apoxie Sculpt is great stuff:

A lot of guys in resin model kit sculpting use it; it sculpts really well, smooths with water (or the mild solvent Aves sells), and air-dries overnight to rock hardness. Check their gallery pages for some great pics of the results you can get with this stuff:
