coolest book! I'd have to guess that there's no english translation...after SDCC I will really have to get "Japanese for Idiots". I've never met anyone who had an easy time learning it.

Awesome thanks! I always hear about certain books but don't know what the covers look like, so I'm hesitant to bid on them.

I have Yuji's vinyl book and Great Empire of Fine Figure (or whatever it's called, the third book), but does that Roman Album Hyper Mook 9 have an ISBN? It looks great. I've never seen a book that covered Hedoro and Zagora.

The ISBN should be on the back cover. It may not have one, though.

While on the topic of ISBNs, could I get the one for Yuji Nishimura's Vinyl Treasure? I've looked up and down for it and can't find any info.

Yeah, I am with Jim on the Death Toys 2000 book. It looks so good on the cover, and you flip through see the four pages with bootleg kaiju (IKB!) and think this book is going to be amazing. Unfortunately you end up with 40 pages of bad robocop bootlegs and other even more inane toys. Regardless, I still own it. I was planning a list of all vintage toy books soon, but I think I have about 40 at this point, and finding 75% of them is a pain.

The Yuji book is recommended reading for anyone looking to learn the basics of the scope of vintage vinyl, but for all it's omissions and price fixing, it is a stunning book that all of us could use as a primer. I should ask Yuji about reprinting it. I think I will. Good idea!

Has anyone ever seen a copy of the legendary Mandarake newsprint book from the mid 90s? It was supposed to be a newsprint black and white reprint of every catalog, order form or piece pf paper they ever came across relating to toys. It is supposed to be insane, and completely unorganized. I have never seen one, only have heard bits and pieces of weird rumors about it. But I saw an auction not to long ago for something that somewhat fit the description, and it went for 40,000 yen! Anyone know anything?

Brian, I've heard of that Mandarake book, but never seen it. It reminds me of the copies of old Toy Shop ads that the Star Wars collectors covet.

There are a couple of mystery numbers on the back of both Nishimura books (vinyl and chogokin) but neither of them conform to ISBN standards so I don't think they're any help.

Incidentally, there's a Chinese bootleg of the Nishimura Chogokin book, which I find hilarious.

The third book that Jim posted above has an ISBN, though: 4-89367-527-3.

What's the best bet for tracking down some of the books shown here? Would it be possible to list the titles, dates, or other relevant info to try to search for them online?

That's a toughie. I acquired most of my books through threats and blind luck.

On eBay, do searches for "kaiju book" and "vinyl book" and "chogokin book" and something should turn up. I don't have any terms you could use on Yahoo Japan, sorry.

For anything that uses an ISBN and might still be in print, you can always try Amazon Japan, which has a very good English interface.
