Post Ultraseven
So one of the things I like most about collecting vintage is that it's already ALL out there. No waiting for releases. Having said that it encompasses quite a bit of toys, but part of the fun is discovering things you did not know. I'm sure some veteran vintage collectors will be like "No big deal, you didn't know that?" but today I discovered there is a Bullmark 30cm removable mask Ultraseven. Found on a interesting japanese blog:

Now I'm quite sure it will be super rare, impossible to find, and expensive which also happens every time I find something I like, but I love it none the less.

For the record, I'm sure the vast majority of veteran vintage collectors are psyched at the continued interest in and appreciation of these obscure things we happen to be passionate about!

Decided to turn this thread into a Ultraseven pic thread, rather than clutter. My favorite Ultra character. Took a cool shot of some Bullmark mini/mid Ultrasevens:

Great mini set Lixx - I also love the little keshi guy popping up in the front row. I hope to someday have enough of each of the Ultra heroes to do a little section like this for the characters. But I also like the hodgepodge display style - goes back and forth depending on the day I think!

I agree; after the giant-sized this one is another beauty (though I have a soft spot for the minis). As I mentioned in the other thread, I just really like his weirdly long and skinny arms and that great pose. Another one I really want to track down - one ended just recently but couldn't make it happen.

Thanks Lixx, I better have won this guy.. I got a look from my wife the whole time when we were out to lunch and I was bidding on YJ from my phone. The bid war between me and one other guy went on for 45min.

Oh man talk about uncomfortable! Women do not take kindly to this, and here you are hoping it just ends with a win and soon. Been there! I actually was bidding on one of these over the weekend and was winning, but then it was time to go out with my girlfriend with just 5 minutes left to go. By the time I checked my phone I lost by 500 yen.

Hi Guys,
Any info on this guy? Is he a bootleg or legit?
I've been looking for a ultra man version that is equal height to my other ultra humans. But now I'm not sure if I should be happy or bummed.

It looks like the 450 Ultraman Jack. If he's approximately 11.5 inches in height, then it's the 450.

Here's a shot of the Hawaii Ultra Seven (left) and the standard Ultra Seven standing in front of a vintage live show poster. The Hawaii U7 has a different head sculpt, is on a slightly orange vinyl, and has the red showing at the top of his chest plate. Mine has a bit of a lean to him.

Excellent pairing Mark. I am guessing, because the Hawaii figures came later, that these are all Bullmark? Now that I know that slight variation, I will have my eyes peeled (extremely unlikely I know). Great poster too!

Thanks for posting that pic Mark. I often see bunches of that sculpt floating around. I know there are a ton of variants but you really need a keen eye to spot many of them. I know mine is a Marusan version but other than that... Here is a translated version of that site that lists the differences:

Sorry, I realize I posted in the wrong section. I was a little too excited again. ha!
Thanks for replying chimply! This makes my 3rd vintage score in a row and the perfect height for my collection. :)
Lixx- is this like the one you told me about?

Mark, do you have those guys easily on hand? I would like to see a close-up comparison shots of the differences you mentioned on the head. I have been pouring over all the variations of the U7 on the Japanese site, and they are many, but the autotranslate function doesn't always provide helpful information.

Here are some additional pics from an auction of the Hawaii version I'll throw up here to save for posterity. You can note the additional Made In Japan sticker for the exported version is still on this one.

Post Re: Ultraseven
Happy to oblige, Steve. That website really lists all the major and minor differences between all the Ultra Sevens, Marusan and Bullmark, but it is a little difficult to understand. According to his descriptions, I have #12 Bullmark Type B and #14 Bullmark Hawaii Version (special). The major head difference is in the base of the eye slugger.
Image
My Hawaii version is "pointed" while the other is "round." He does show that the other Hawaii version also has the "round" base. While I can neither confirm nor deny his height measurements, because both of mine have a nasty lean, the Hawaii version is slightly taller. The other differences, red at the top of the collar and the slightly orange vinyl, may be easier to spot in auction photos and are consistent on both Hawaii versions. Also, if it has the "Made in Japan" export sticker on the foot, you're golden!

My Hawaii version was one of the earliest Bullmarks I ever purchased. I got it from a shop in Hawaii that had an early web presence. It was very cheap, as were all the other Ultra Seven Hawaii kaiju I purchased from them. I don't know how many times over the years I almost sold it because it did not look like the ones illustrated in reference books. Finally, I decided to get a "normal" one and hang on to the "weird" one. I am very glad I did :D

Thank you so much Mark, that is actually a huge help. I love that site, and all the info it provides, but I definitely wish I understood it better AND that you could embiggen the photos (this especially). You can really tell that the curator is a devoted fan, and that is something I can really appreciate.

I was interested to read about the height difference too. Unlike the more subtle mold changes, this is something I wasn't expecting. You got a great score there on yours, and I am certainly happy you ended up hanging on to him through the years. Finding stuff early like this from mail-order catalogs or the burgeoning days of the internet was just such a different world of collecting; I kinda miss it - but it certainly was harder.

While I love the giant sized U7 incredibly, the standard sized figure is a close runner-up. Finally tracked one of these down, so I wanted to share some photos. This is a really great toy. I know I can get a bit verbose with my enthusiasm for vintage toys, so anyways, I'll just get on to the pics.

Thanks Scott! I am really happy with him. One of those figures I was chasing after a while. He is a little loved, but I got him for a relative bargain compared to better condition ones that have come up for sale. He is definitely going to stand in a place of honor on the shelf.

An interesting thing about this toy is how soft he is. The vinyl is really pliable, he is the softest of any vintage toys I have, short of being rubber or keshi. Really nice that he stayed like a child's toy still, as oftentimes vintage stuff can get fairly rigid as the plastic ages.

Great score Steve! No wonder you were trying to get me to get one of these you clever devil. Yeah I do need this Ultraseven, I think if I could find one stateside/ or the bay at a reasonable price I'd pull the trigger. That's a tall order though. I'm trying to avoid YJA because I tend to get the "just one more syndrome" which becomes 25 expensive toys! Yours looks like it's in good shape too, I've seen some pretty wrecked versions of this guy.
