Custom-Haters Forum?
I already know the answer to this (no), but can we get a forum so those of us who still hate customs can talk shit about them? The pro-customs crowd got a forum of their own, how about one for the anti-custom crowd? (Don't worry all you customizers - I like some of what some of you do! )

Re: Custom-Haters Forum?
Don't you guys do that in the custom threads and anywhere else you can fit it in anyway?

Either we've all taken to silence or we're in the vast minority now...I think it's the minority. Its been a complete 180. Actually, even though I'd never want to own a custom, I usually like looking through the customs forum, but generally refrain from saying much. Most of the really shitty customs have all but dried up. But there are still some that I just...

Wow, I'm all for a little experimentation. But that's just like, I fucked this up and I know it's fucked, and I'm not even going to try to salvage it.
On a side note. I think customizers on this board have come a long way. I don't buy customs, but like to look. I think there are plenty of painters on the board that could be spraying runs in the factory.

Re: Custom-Haters Forum?
ok i'll go under the troll bridge..... what do the haters think about toy designers that hold custom shows? "sanctioned" customs if you will. what about customizers that now have their own toy designs and paint one-offs of those? are those even considered customs? because it's their own designs are those one-offs now acceptable by the haters? Paul Kaiju and LASH come to mind.

toybotstudios wrote: what do the haters think about toy designers that hold custom shows? "sanctioned" customs if you will. That's the toy designer's business. If that's what he/she wants to do, then whatever. There are usually a few pretty exceptional pieces and a whole lot of crap. toybotstudios wrote: what about customizers that now have their own toy designs and paint one-offs of those? are those even considered customs? because it's their own designs are those one-offs now acceptable by the haters? Yeah, someone painting their own sculpt is termed a one-off rather than a custom. Even if I like the aesthetics of a one-off I have no interest in owning one. Something that I've found bothersome lately is that it appears Gargamel is more interested in one-offs and merely uses the production release as a way to keep peoples attention. They make some pretty terrific one-offs, but their regular releases have been god awful. It's especially disappointing to see them make a very simple and elegant one-off that could EASILY have been a production piece.

Re: Custom-Haters Forum?
yes.....
as usual, economics dictate the situation. If a toy maker can make $300-$400 each for a one-off vs. $40-$100 each for production runs, what is a toy maker to do? what would you do?

What I would do is make a run of the simple colorways and limit one-offs to complex sprays. You can sell one for $400 or you can sell 20 at $100 and make $2,000 (or sell 50 and make $5,000). I would only make one-offs that would be too work-intensive to make into a production run. As an example, I would make the green/yellow Zag pictured below into a production run. IMO it would be the most successful Gargamel release in AGES. From the looks of it, it would also be a simpler spray-job than the upcoming regular release zag pictured below it (which SUCKS). And then I'd only do one-offs that utilize a lot of sprays, or complex sprays, like these guys (even though I love the Zag on the right): Essentially, Gargamel has WAY TOO MANY simple one-offs that could be made into production pieces. I don't understand why they make such great one-offs and then turn out such turds (lately) with the production runs. Give us the good stuff!!!

I would do the production run. Run of 50 x $100/each = $5,000 As for customs/one-off's.....I love them. But for me, I don't like buying customs that aren't painted by the same person whose figure it is. I just think that having someone else paint it makes it a platform toy in the most basic sense. Having the actual artist paint his/her own figure just elevates it to another level. The exception of course are artists who paint on figures they are closely associated with. Like anyone in the Gargamel gang painting Gargamel made figures or like Kaws painting a KvP or like when Pus painted an Usugrow Rebel. At least to me, there is a story behind the relationship and it separates itself from being just a platform.

Re: Custom-Haters Forum?
I definitely agree on NT's observations on the recent Gargamel one-offs. Most of them are SOOOO simple and look like they should be production pieces, which makes both the lack of any good new releases AND the fuck-off pricing of those one-offs suck.

I'm definitely feeling the same way, although i tend to prefer the more production styles one offs over the super detailed ones which means i would stop buying the one offs. Sad to say most of the fullsize zags released in the past 1-2 years have been average at best.
