Their good stuff is cluttered behind a locked glass window and the staff will stand there as you select. Super awkward. Never had that happen, could be just you... you probably just looked like a shoplifter and they weren't taking any chances yeah that's definitely what it must have been. still, it's the best place to grab stuff in the city. I had that happen too. It would help if they had their price tags a little more visible sometimes. It would cut down on the "Oh! Too much, gotta put it back." awkwardness.

Re: NY in July
hey all. just arrived back from NY. thanks for all the adivce.
Didn't buy much with San Diego just around the corner, but it was awesome to see so many pieces i hadn't seen before in the flesh.
i picked up one or two vintage toys from Toy Tokyo but nothing new. (they actually have a pretty sweet collection of old toys like thundercats, he-man etc.).
I really don't like that kaiju cabinet. What a pain in the ass. the lady there was actually super helpfull and friendly, but as someone who takes hours agonizing over purchases the process doesn't work for me.
the folks at myplasticheart were super cool and was rad to talk toys with them. some serious greasebat fans over there : )
the weirdest toy event of the trip was walking into Kid Krapbot and seeing them selling a Super7 Visighost. the weirdest non-toy event of the trip was: - watching an asian lady walk into the penguin store and clean her sunglasses on a $100 dollar shirt. -watching the asian store clerk crap on her and then walk over to me and say 'i apologize for my race' with a big grin
Anyway, NY is one hot-damn special city.
for anyone visiting for a very short time, these are my must-dos: - dim sum at dim sum go go in chinatown - $5 glasses of wine at the Cuban spot across the road from Toy Tokyo (way more fun to buy toys drunk) - watch some basketball in the park across from MPH while you wait for them to open - walk the highline - visit the little lebowski store on Thompson Street - take photos of almost every building and almost every piece of graffiti

Based on your description of the day and whatever I feel like I saw you when I went into my plastic heart. I bought a mag while you were chatting it up with the owner about nyc comic con? You had a backpack on? Maybe!

I was just in NYC this past week as well. Here are some shots I took @ Toy Tokyo: Toy Tokyo Kaiju by Beautification Syndrome, on Flickr Toy Tokyo Kaiju walls by Beautification Syndrome, on Flickr I highly recommend San Loco across the street. Great Mexcian food (Chicken Queso Loco was my favorite when I lived there) and very cheap frozen magaritas (2.75 after the first one!): Frozen Margarita @ San Loco NYC by Beautification Syndrome, on Flickr Margaritas... by Beautification Syndrome, on Flickr Chicken Queso Loco by Beautification Syndrome, on Flickr

This thread turned out even more handier for me than I thought. I'll definitely check out these food spots.

Re: NY in July
Wish I had seen this earlier.
After 5pm hit up Oh Taisho at St Marks, a few doors west of St Mark's comics. Get a party platter of yakitori and go for the large frozen calpico + vodka drink. It's a giant frozen beer mug about 16" tall.
THEN go to toy tokyo about 15 mins before they close and demand to see stuff from hard to reach places, delicate vintage, in crammed glass cases... they will love it! Tell them you're friends with LORNE. Which would be even funnier if you tell it to him and you don't know him...
No seriously. Oh Taisho. And for the new travelers... If you hit toy tokyo you're only 3-4 blocks from MPH. and from there you can jump on the F/V trains toward Brooklyn and get off at York (3-4 quick stops) and go to Zakka.
And don't forget to wander around Chinatown looking for weird bootleg toys. There is nothing like seeing Batman some Go rangers and the dad character from the indestructibles all on one card.
There is a $1 pizza spot if you're on a budget, also in st marks - 2 bros pizza.

This sounds amazing.. I think I'm going to do this next week. Also, I asked about that Toy Tokyo web sale discrepancy... apparently the web store is a separate entity out in Jersey somewhere, so all sales on the web have nothing to do with the actual shop. So... go buy your toy for half off online or for full price in the shop.

Re: NY once again
Reviving this thread. I'll be revisiting New York later this month.
Anything new to add to this list? Please feel free to share : )
I'd especially love to know if there are any cool happenings around 19-21 Feb, spots to pick up cool prints or posters, or any rad flea-market type places.
Also, is Zakka worth a visit?

Re: New York spots - February 2014
When I visit NYC I always try to make it over to Dumbo to pop into Zakka, great little shop in a cool area. It was voted best toy shop in NYC in 2013. http://www.villagevoice.com/bestof/2013 ... e-4400494/

Wow, somehow I've never been to or even heard of Zakka. I think I'll have to make a trip there on Friday!

Re: New York spots - February 2014
Yeah Zakka is tucked away right by the water on a little street in Dumbo, definitely easy to pass by and never notice. It's always quiet when I go there, not too much walk-in traffic, other than from the design companies in that area. But a great place and the owner is really nice!

I'm always shocked how few options there are, it's great that there's one on this side of the river. I think the new Scumbags and Superstars store is carrying some stuff too. I'm going to try to check out their new shop this week.
