New York spots - February 2014

Sun Jun 19, 2011 5:03 pm

hey all.

Gonna be heading out to New York next month (from 11 July to 18 July).

It's gonna be my first visit and it's a business trip so time will be precious.
I was hoping for some advice on toy stores, cool shit to see and do etc... (If i read one more 'things to do in New York' list I'm gonna puke)

i know about myplasticheart and Toy Tokyo but that's about it.

cheers,
md

Kaiju isn't nearly as big on the east coast as you would think. It's much stronger on the west coast. Though TT has a great selection. I guess you could add Forbidden Planet and Image Anime to the list of Toy Stores, for action figures/pvc figures.

thx Joe.
i didn't even know forbidden planet had a NY store.
Any money I have left over after toy purchases these days (we're talking frikkin pennies at this point) is immediately absorbed by comics, so this tip will def help : )

also, anyone know where I might be able to pick up the Toypunks dvd in NY ?

I'm also looking for any great Kaiju resource material i might be able to pick up there - i've read 'beyond ultraman', 'full vinyl' and 'So Crazy Japanese' but that's it.

There's kidrobot too, of course.

St. Mark's Comic may have some older kaiju....I'm trying to remember the last time I was there.

Midtown Comics (in midtown  ) are cool shops too.

as far as I know, both their online shop & brick + mortar battlestations are fully operational.

myplasticheart is open.

another place, if you are into comic books that I just found is Pinocchio Discounts on McDonald Ave in Brooklyn.
Its an old shop that's packed to the brim with old comics and baseball cards, really cluttered, but has tons of stuff.

Yeah lurker is on the ball with his list. Toy Tokyo is expensive though. Mph is nice but very small. Unless your driving in NYC remember that mishka and zakka are in Brooklyn. Not manhattan. Don't forget to always hit MOMA, the natural history museum or the MET. Where are you staying and what are the days your coming out?

thx IamMordecai

not sure where i'm staying yet but i'm guessing it will be union square area or financial district.

I'm gonna be there from the 11-18th july.

i'm gonna try and get to the Kaws sculpture at the Standard and Jeremy Fish has a show up until the 16th at Joshua Liner gallery.

that's about all i've rustled up so far.

Kaws is also part of an art show going on with Erik Parker at Paul Kasmin Gallery called "Pretty on the Inside".

They might have taken the friends with you down last weekend.
It was cool, but the environment killed the instalation.

I used to go to ToyQube all the time when I was in high school and it was in the back of this mall in flushing. There were all these random shops and then there was this toy mecca. It's moved a couple of blocks from that mall since then. Haven't been there for years but I remember their stock getting a significant downgrade since they moved. Hope that's changed. Worth a visit at least.

Also,
If you're going to ToyTokyo, you should know what you want before hand. Their good stuff is cluttered behind a locked glass window and the staff will stand there as you select. Super awkward.

...and make sure you check out the website. A lot of their items are on sale for half-off on the website, but not in the store. I think they'd honor you pointing that out to them but I haven't tried yet.

pretty crappy. nothing anywhere near kaiju stuff and they probably make more money with bubble tea then anything else they sell.
