Post Moving to Chicago. Help?
Hey boardies,

I am making the move sometime this summer to attend Northwestern for my graduate work. I am looking to live in Edgewater or Andersonville. I have been to chicagoapartmentfinders.com and found it to be helpful, but I need some advice from the natives. I will be doing a lot of my work on Clark street, away from the University.

I have a 70 lb pitbull and would like, at least, a courtyard. Any ideas on places for a dude with a dog?

Thanks!

sounds like a job for bryan... i think he's the farthest north of the lot of us. if you were looking for something closer to the city, i may have some suggestions,
but andersonville is a bit beyond my normal stomping grounds... but yay! new CASK'er! someone else who may show up to events! *cough*jeff*cough* =p

There's a Latvian church, on Montrose, and right across from it there's a great apartment building. The whole Dunning neighborhood is really nice, and there were some very nice affordable apartments. Also Sunnyside has a few really nice apartments as well. It's about a 10 minute walk from the L train, and a 20 minute walk from Clark.

Great, thanks for the tips so far!

That far north is not my first choice, but I need to be able to split the difference between Northwestern (Evanston) and the building I will be doing my other masters work in (Clark st.). I also might try to transfer with the company I am with to work part time at our location on Michigan Ave.

Andersonville is a beautiful place with a lot of awesome apts. You'll probably have to look for something west of Clark though because the apts to the east of it are really close together and not a whole lot have a courtyard.
There are nice parts of living in the North End. Andersonville is really nice and the Metra gets you downtown in like 20 minutes. Good luck in your search and if you have any more questions let me know.

I guess I'm just confused as to where you are on Clark... It does run pretty much through all of Chicago. (You could be on Clark in the South Loop, River North, Wrigleyville... You get the picture.) But definitely sound like you want to be close to the Red Line, so add that in as a parameter for your searches.

You have to remember with all the dog parks, there isn't a need for a large back yard. I have close friends living in Evanston, I'll see if I can find something reasonable in the area, and get back to you.

I live a little NW of Andersonville, but I'm no help  Cool area though. Hope you're ready for the most expensive gas and taxes in the country. But the food is #1 and it's a fun place.

I'd suggest a welcome party but I probably couldn't make it no matter what (I'm like Sasquach around here in more ways than one) we all seems to be poorly organized.

hey, just because it takes us WEEKS to figure out how to get the majority of us together, doesn't mean we aren't organized... it just means we aren't that efficient. =p

Post Re: Moving to Chicago. Help?
Wow, thanks for all of the info!

To clarify a little - I am not looking for a large backyard, as I tend to walk my dog 2-3 miles a day. I just want something where he can use the bathroom and I don't have to walk too far from my apt., especially in the cold!

The building I will be at is on South clark street where it intersects with west adams street in the heart od downtown, I think.

I will be moving a month before school starts so I will have time to get used to the trains and buses. Any tips on getting year passes for the metra or L?

Some employers or schools can get you discounted or un-taxed CTA cards, not sure what yours does but you may wanna look into that.

There are a ton of really great dog parks, in that area. If you look up dog park on google maps, and click on letter B, there's a photo of a building, and not a park. That building is an apartment complex, that allows dogs, and it's a 5 minute walk from a really great off-leash Dog Park. Make sure and stock up on plastic bags, for dog poop, and you'll be set to live anywhere. I really envy you moving into that awesome neighborhood. If I didn't have the responsibility of taking care of my mother, I would move to Chicago in a heartbeat.

There's no reason to have a car if your living in Chicago, the L train will give you a good headstart on getting anywhere in the city. The cabbies, are plentiful (if your to drunk to walk) The music scene is amazing, on any given night you can see a hip hop act, a great DJ (techno, trance, progressive, ambient, Jungle, dub, dubstep, etc...) a reggae act, some folk music, some punk, and end your night dancing to the house band, at Carols which plays some of the best country covers in town (J. Cash, Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson, Hank Williams Sr). Last of all but not least, there are amazing restaurants from every possible ethnicity, Hi Ricky has some of the best Thai noodles in the country, and if your nursing a hangover, and want to watch a Michigan game on a sunday 20 dollars get's you an all you can drink bloody mary or mimosa bar.

I'm really envious of you man, Chicago is a blast.

Thanks guys. I am excited too, but nervous. I am looking forward to the move, but have never lived in such an urban area. I am currently in Louisville, KY which is a pretty great area that is also in the Midwest. I have been to Chicago many times, but visiting somewhere and living somewhere are completely different.

There is a reason to have a car in Chicago when you have a kid, it's arctic half the year and you work 10 miles from your home on off hours.

Yeah your right, the only time I've lived in Chicago, was a summer, and I rode skateboard, and the L. In my experience a car was just a sure fire way to rack up money in tickets, but if I was a father, I would have a totally different view.

hahaha, I'm actually from Louisville! Yeah, visiting and living is completely different. If your dog is friendly, he can come and meet mine sometime and we can walk them down by the beach. I've got two mutts but they are sweet as can be. Actually Legoomba is from Lexington and he lives here now too. Such a small damn world.

I've got my monocle and top hat ready. I'm actually half hillbilly, my dad was born and raised in the mountains of TN. So, ya know, we cool. I just wanted to see a "SMH" post on Skullbrain.

Post Re: Moving to Chicago. Help?
So, I just returned from Chicago and I think I have narrowed it down to two neighborhoods - Edgewater and Lakeview.

The problems I am having are that the rentals for September (when I am moving) won't be up until July ish and a lot of the management companies won't rent to a person with a pit bull. If you guys know of any one renting a place (preferably $1000 or less) please PM me.

I need to be along the purple/red line between Evanston and the Loop.

Thanks!
