Chicago Underground

Hi dudes-
I'll be moving to Chicago for a bit this fall and I was hoping I could ask for your advice. What areas are affordable, safe, and interesting to live in (and also not far from Loyola University on Sheridan Ave)? Are there many dog friendly apartments? What do you like to eat in Chicago? Where's your favorite place to drop in for a quick drink? What areas should be avoided late at night? Thanks for your help!

Rogers Park or West Ridge/West Rogers Park are all near Loyola. Like some parts of the city, it can be block for block (1 block OK next block not) but overall they're OK areas. IT'S WHERE I LIVE! And Bryan...I think? Interesting? Of course! There's a huge Indian/Pakistani area near (really more west ridge/west rogers park) and all sorts of other stuff. I don't know about bars since I don't do that. I can't advice where to avoid late at night. Anywhere where there's not a lot of light and people? The entire Southside (lol.)?
Eat? Oh man, another thread all together.
Hope that's helpful. The other locals who leave their places might be more help. I live about 10 min. from Loyola in West Ridge. There should be an OK amount of dog friendly joints. I own a condo, but rent one too, and allow dogs. I don't think it's uncommon.

Thank you! This is helpful. I was really considering Rogers Park since it's adjacent to campus but I didn't know anything about what it was like. I'm glad to hear you like it.

Rogers Park is fine it's safe, a nice cultural mix, and Grillin is some of the best burgers you'll ever have.
If you like the night life... You like to boogy, you will have to take the L a little south but there are a ton of bars not far from the RoPa. one of our favorites to just drink is Fat Cat's.
Also Headquarters just opened off the Diversy Brown line, and it's pretty cool if you like video games. It does crowded though.

Did you ever find a place?

Yes, I did! Thank you all for your help. I'm going to be a resident of Roger's Park beginning late this May.

Do tell what c2e2 is. I went from having a cushy job in SK to being a student again, so traveling is a bit out of my budget right now, hahaha. Other than that, anything in the city I am game for, specially since I have never been here before.

Tell me about it! It's a huge change, but Chicago is a cool town and I'll be back all the time.

This is so late, but if you get there and figure out you aren't in love with Rogers park, I really loved living in Ravenswood. It is a really safe neighborhood with tons of great restaurants and bars. You've got Half Acre on Lincoln, one of the amazing Chicago brewers that have popped up in the last few years. Also check out Revolution brewing. Great food and amazing beer. Different neighborhood, but worth getting over to.

I ended up in uptown and I love it! Great people and great eateries out here.
