Re: Tabernak! Où sont les Canadiens?
I didn't end up going as the timing was too up in the air for me, and couldn't spend all night there. Did you check it out? I happened to see the Goldarak set today when I picked up my program, 179$!!! Yikes. Whoever won that last night was one lucky fella. I wanted to go just for the giveaway to be honest. I wish we could get some of these anime releases in English, or better yet, original Japanese - I wonder why they are so tight with their licenses. Anyways, I plan on checking out a lot of films as usual. Going to start perusing and picking out the 'prime candidates' now, but I am open to anything.

Re: Tabernak! Où sont les Canadiens?
Nice! I can picture it filled with toys already. Only needs a couple Gargantuas to move it (and plenty o' space of course).

Re: Tabernak! Où sont les Canadiens?
I am on the job hunt (again). Got to go wherever I can find work unfortunately. I really don't want to leave Montreal, this city is such a great place to live.

Re: Tabernak! Où sont les Canadiens?
Just a quick question guys, besides Plateau, what neighborhoods are nice to live in and what are to avoid ? And not to far from UQAM or Orange line.
I heard Rosemont is nice and quiet, I think I'll look for something here.

Re: Tabernak! Où sont les Canadiens?
Le Plateau is swarming with French people, so if you want to see something else, I'd avoid it. It's now pretty pricey too. Go north. Rosemont isn't bad. If you go to UdeM, might as well stay close to the proper subway line, so Villeray is a great neigborhood. Close to a nice market, some good restaurants, and if you're close to the Jean-Talon station, easy access to downtown. Walkable distance to the Plateau as well. Do get in touch if you come over to Ottawa as well.

Re: Tabernak! Où sont les Canadiens?
Part of what makes Montreal so great is that it has all these diverse neighbourhoods. Each of them has distinct characters and pluses for living there, it would be hard for me to pick a favourite, and even then I have found each person's tastes are very different. Villeray is definitely very cool, and still affordable, unlike a lot of areas which are being gentrified unfortunately. The plateau is nice too of course, but that is kind of a given, and is very pricey and not all that convenient for UdeM commuting I would say. Really anywhere is fairly easy to use transit from if you can get near a metro it opens up the whole city; buses are okay, but highly unreliable (not that the metro is either). There are some nice affordable places close to campus too, and CDN has shopping close by.

Re: Tabernak! Où sont les Canadiens?
Oh, if you want to stay on the "ligne bleue" (the UdeM subway line), I'd avoid St-Michel and Parc Extension, poor, rougher neighborhoods (unless you're really really broke). Fabre station, one east of Jean-Talon, is getting nicer though. My brother lives there. I was just north of Jean-Talon and we loved it there.

Re: Tabernak! Où sont les Canadiens?
Thanks for all the tips guys.
Honestly, I'm just looking for something affordable and quiet. And I'll study at UQAM so Orange Line I think.
Are Villeray and Rosement far away from Berri Uqam ? And is it still easy to rent something even if I only arrive in December ?
And Oli, I'll definitely let you know if I come by Ottawa. We'll probably try to travel a bit during our stay.

Re: Tabernak! Où sont les Canadiens?
Oops! Not too far, no. It's even walkable (more or less one hour?) from Rosemont. Villeray is two subway stops north of Rosemont, which itself is three north of Berri-UQAM. You could check out St-Henri, which is further west but on the UQAM line and is getting gentrified as well but still affordable from what I hear. Leases usually run from July to June, but I've moved in the middle of winter a number of times myself. Less choices, but less competition as well. I'd take a look at kijiji, les pac and craigslist prior to coming and schedule a few visits. Do you have a temporary place to stay? Some landlords ask for references, so it may be nice to bring some from France if you can. Most apartments aren't furnished either, so you'll either have to look for some that are or then get cheap furniture once here.

Re: Tabernak! Où sont les Canadiens?
Any idea how long is the commute from like Villeray to Berri Uqam ?
I'm already looking on kijiji, just so I know what kind of places I can have with my budget. My gf want to avoid "demi sous-sol", unfortunately it seems that quite a lot of affordable apartment are "demi sous-sol"...
I still live at my parents so I have no references even in France... Hope it won't be much of a problem. Can you just present like an account report ?
I know some people in Montreal, I'll try to ask if we can stay at their place for a week while we look for an apartment. Or I guess I'll have to pay for a furnished room for a week.
About furniture, I hope I can find a place with at least a bed, so I have less thing to buy from Ikea ^^ I heard a lot of people just buy the furnitures of the person moving out so I maybe I'll be able to do that.
Oh, another thing, is it still easy for student to find a part time job off campus ?
If any of you know somebody who has an appartment for rent hit me up :p

Re: Tabernak! Où sont les Canadiens?
Oh right, I forgot it was UQAM you were going to. You might also look in the area east of downtown. That's where I live. The neighbourhood is not near as cultural or done up as the others, but it is cheap and you can certainly get a taste of the Quebecois experience. As for travelling, on a budget I walk everywhere, even up to Jean-Talon Villeray, but that is a hike. It's easy enough to get around, winter being a bit more challenge, but if you are under 25 you can get a student rate transit pass which tops every other option. Highly recommend it. Then you have the option of bus or metro when you want them. The commute on Metro is not long at all. Orange line can be busy during rush hours (which here last 2 hour buffers on each side of the start/end times. I don't know what it will be like if/when new cars arrive. It is a personal choice for me, but I prefer longer commutes on one line, then having to change trains. St. Henri is nice, and it is not everyone's cup of tea, but you can get cheap places in La Salle too. Bad timing, I have a place AND it is all furnished, but I will be moving out September. I lived in a basement before and would not do it again if I had the choice. It would have to be (a) really nice, and/or (b) quite cheap. Unless they are really enough above ground and recently renovated, they can be cold, damp, dark, and depressing.

Re: Tabernak! Où sont les Canadiens?
I happened to find some Montreal-ers wandering around Dowtown Disney here in Orlando! Stephane aka nefasth & family (whose names I will not attempt to butcher with my spelling) Didn't have a whole lot of time, but got to talk toys for a bit & present a long-overdue custom, as well as some goodies for the boys' respective birthday(s). He told me he was bringing down a can of "Quebec Gold," which I assumed was some sort of craft beer... needless to say I was quite a bit more excited when it was revealed to be top-grade Maple Syrup!
