Holdiay Tradefest at Super7: Dec 12th
For all the SF locals S7 will be holding a Holiday event at Super7 on Dec 12th at 10am. We are opening early so we won't be bother by any civilians for the 1st hour or so. Super7 will be providing coffee and donuts.
This trade fest will also include a white elephant gift exchange. So please bring a gift to participate.
What is a white elephant party:
All participants draw a number (from a hat, perhaps) to determine their order. An alternative to the drawing is to sit in a circle and take turns in a clockwise or counterclockwise direction.
The participant with #1 unwraps any gift from the pile and then shows it to everyone. Each successive participant, in the order determined from the drawing, or in clockwise or counterclockwise order, can either 1) "steal" an already opened gift (if there's one they really like) or 2) be adventurous and go for a wrapped gift from the pile. If the participant chooses to steal, the person whose gift is stolen now repeats his turn and either 1) steals another person's gift (he cannot immediately steal back the gift that was just stolen from him) or 2) unwraps a new gift.
This cycle of stealing can sometimes continue for a long time, until a new gift is chosen, at which point the turn is passed to the participant with the next number from the drawing, or whoever is next in the circle, whichever arrangement is chosen.
Since items can be stolen, the item in your possession is not yours until the game is over. However, this is often amended with a rule declaring a gift "dead" or "safe" after it has been stolen a certain number of times (usually two or three). This helps the process go more smoothly (avoiding, for example, the hypothetical scenario of the same gift being stolen by every successive participant) and limits the disadvantage of being among the first to choose gifts. The game is over once all names have been withdrawn from the hat or all gifts are opened."
If you are coming please send me an email so I know how much coffee and donuts to buy. If you have a favorite pastry let me know.

Re: Holdiay Tradefest at Super7: Dec 12th
This is a really cool idea. The "steal my white elephant" thing sounds like a recipe for violence and mayhem. Not much is valued at $30 or less in this scene; I suspect some will bring presents of greater value, but what the heck ... it'll be fun. I have nothing new to trade so hopefully locals won't roll their eyes when seeing some of the "same old" stuff. See y'all there.

Re: Holdiay Tradefest at Super7: Dec 12th
dean, you always bring good stuff this is exciting. if you have a gift for the elephant that is over $30, just scratch it up to reduce the market value.
i will bring something quite valuable. eyeballs, six of them.

I e-mailed an RSVP to Pogue and it bounced back with a message advising me to report Dean to Pogue if Dean was in any way abusive.

I guess I should have said "bring whatever you like" for the white elephant trade but don't expect to get much more than $35 worth of stuff in return.

Put me down. Sounds fun if I can just get down there by 10am on Saturday. Good thing to do before going by the Kaiju Invades San Francisco exhibit later that day at Double Punch.

Just wanted to say thanks again to S7 for putting this on. It was great meeting up with everyone and the gift exchange was a ton of fun. Big thanks to the folks that traded with me, too. It's nice to know that the customs I traded went to such great people. -Dustin

Thanks to S7 for doing this. I had a good time, lots of fun and great seeing everyone again. Here's some photos but Joe's coverage is way more extensive. http://www.flickr.com/photos/34295608@N ... 990754220/

Re: Holdiay Tradefest at Super7: Dec 12th
Looks like some of you brought really nice "white elephants" unless I'm misunderstanding the photos. I was gonna bring my Maxtoy Alien Xam that is a perfectly fine toy, but that nobody wants. Also a horrendous custom by someone I won't name, just for bad measure. !#$%@#! cold virus prevented me from attending but it was a blast looking at the photos. Thanks for sharing them guys.
Kirkland if that Maxtoy Pharos was the "white elephant" you ended up with, I've gotta say ... of Mark's early collabs that was a knockout. I've never understood why it's constantly on the aftermarket at super-low prices.
