OK. I've wanted to lash out about this for a bit and I figure Skullbrain is the best place to do so.

I fucking hate it when collectors take fantastically rare and aesthetically cool pieces and display them with contemporary toys. I personally feel that shit is sacrilegious. Do I really need to give examples? C'mon? You know what I'm talking about.

So, I've told myself that I am and elitist. That's subsided this onslaught of truth long enough. Well.... No more. It's not me, it's you.

It sucks. Don't allow a vintage Popy Jumbo Machinder anywhere near a Power Ranger "jumbo". No more Gaorangers in the stall of Sun Vulcan. The buck stops here. Either you knock that shit off or I will hunt you down one by one and we will go over Erik Sjoen vintage japanese toy collection etiquette one by one mercenary style. OK? Good..

So, all joking aside, what the fuck is it displaying the good stuff with the TRU pick ups? No good say me.

I don't separate by vintage vs. new. To me, they are all toys that were originally designed for enjoyment by children. I think it is interesting to display vintage pieces- rare or not- next to their modern counterparts to show the evolution of design over time.

On the other hand, I tend to collect by character, rather than line or company. For example, I have a large collection of Gouf toys from the first Gundam series onward. If I were to separate these out, well, that would be kind of a mess (ignore the fact that there are not many vintage Gouf toys).

Erik, I suggest you take any and all toys made after 1985 in your collection and give them to me so I can sell them and buy 70's tin.

I think that way we are both happy. You don't have to think about bad design mixing with your pure blood line and I can, as I say ,get tins for free.

So, I'm half way joking but mostly serious. I'm a fucking purebred elitist about this shit skull and bones style. I'm also very gay with fem boys like Josh F. So to answer your question sweet tits, c'mon over and get it.

Now, let us get one thing straight here. I think there have been some pretty cool toys designed and made in the last 30 years, and I'm wasn't saying they all suck just most of them. This discussion is about display, because I could write a book about how it all ended in 85. But when it comes to displaying some hunk of shit that you bought from hobbylink Japan that looks like some meth head designed it (sorry Kawamori ie Aquarion) and a Chokinzoku Tetsujin 28, get a new case. I know you little babies are going to cry about space and a toy is a toy and all that bullshit, but just fucking knock it off. Use your better judgment. Consider yourselves warned.

-Chairman Sjoen

BTW, ever notice that Super #1 Robot ends in 1985? Hmmmm... Now why did they do that? It was because Warren, Duban, Yen, Josh F and I have collections that span up until then. The 5 modern toys pictured in the back are the only ones we own collectively. Now what I just said is a straight up mother fucking lie, but it sounded sooooo good. Long live the vintage. BID IT NOW!!

Eric,

You're totally right. fucking 'ay... why bother displaying the crappy shit at all? fuck that. I've thought long and hard about your message and decided to assemble the "Ultimate Shelves" in my collection. Each piece hand selected to represent the very best in the genre. Feast thine eyes on this and get ready to be jealous. Please no pms with offers to purchase or trade. These are in the perma-collection and no amount of $$ will pry them out.

A JUmbo Doublas next to a Power Rangers Meghazord = bad. I will give you that. Then again, a nice 1960's marx nutty mad tin trike next to a Skullbrian needs to make sense. I think rasther than new vs. old, you are looking at quality vs. crap and arrange display accordingly.

Then again, maybe you are just a raging hardline chogo-nerd. Oh wait. You are.

It really depends on the collection. Akum6's suggested "character collections" is a perfect example. My biggest problem is when everything is mixed together by a collector who doesn't have much discrimination in what they collect across the board... or an eye for composition. Toybotstudios' pic is getting there, but it can be a lot worse when things like Pokemon, Marvel/DC Comics characters, D*nnys, "art toys", items that are broken/missing pieces, plush items, dolls, etc. are thrown in the mix. Especially with notable prize of the collection items it should all about the toys (old or new) complimenting each other, not crap stealing all the attention just for being crap.

You also gotta cut a break to new collectors that might only have a dire few vintage items.

The Lego wizard is a neat figure, though I am biased because his wand is GID.
