Post Question about clay?
What kind of clay do SB's use to their sculpts? The clay that you use to make your "prototypes", before you make the mold. Im interested in making some resin figures. Is Sculpey clay work well?

Any thought's would be much appreciated.

Post Re: Question about clay?
I use a mix of super sculpey, black sculpey, and Sculpey firm.
Basically, take a box of super sculpey mix it up with a little pack of the black sculpey, then I add in a large chunk of sculpey firm. Sculpey firm seems to come in a bunch of different consistancies, and it's pretty random. The box I have right now is super hard. I probably couldn't sculpt with it if it wasn't mixed with Super Sculpey.

Some guys use wax. There are times when I fuck something up and really wish it was wax because it would be so much easier to fix. But a lot of steps for wax, and more expensive tools are needed. I think Sculpey is a good place to start.

there are a ton of clays that will work to make a mold. beginners tend to use the super sculpey stuff that you can see in a lot of work-in-progress threads in this resin section and the customs section.

if you don't care about your prototype surviving the molding process (and frankly scarlet, i don't usually give a damn). you can use a mix and match approach using whatever clay works with your hands/tools. as long as it will hold its form for days on end. i started using traditional sculpting clay- the kind that you would use to make wax-copy. that wax-copy would be used to make a bronze sculpture in lost-wax casting, but i didn't even make the wax-copy. just used that kind of clay to make my silicone molds.

Joeman- Thank you for your mix. I have sometimes have a hard time getting the sculpey to stay firm. I think that might help me get the consistency that I want.

Question for you Uberboy. Does the clay that you use harden on its own? does it need to be baked like sculpy?

Thank you to both for shedding some light on this subject
:D

Why Vaseline? What does that do?

Why Vaseline? What does that do?

serves to make the clay more pliable and sticky.
... you just try a little piece of clay and you will say to me... 8)

So what is the mix?

1 part clay to 1 part vaseline?

or do you just add vaseline till you get the consistency that you want?

Thank you

I can't imagine it'd be anywhere near as high as 1 to 1... think of how goopy and indomitable Vasalene is...
