garadama, if you're conducting some serious business transactions you might need a translator, otherwise you can get by just fine in Tokyo with a minimal understanding of Japanese. I recommend these books:
- Lonely Planet Tokyo City Guide
- Japanese Phrases for Dummies
- Tokyo Underground (duh)
