I usually ditch the staples out of a concern that they may rust and discolor the header over time if left in place. Hawaii is a pretty humid place. I do keep Bwana staples though, because they're all colorful and pretty-like.

When you move to San Jose you wont have to worry about the humidity so you can keep the staples in.

I keep my headers in their bags and put all of that in a plastic container. I've bought stuff without headers though. I like the headers with the toys. "feels complete".
It bugs me a little when I buy something with the header and I get the wrong one. like a gargamel header with the wrong name on the back or something. but in the container it goes with the rest. I don't lose sleep over it.

I really like headers also and do save everything...but for certain things it doesn't really matter.
You guys in humid places....Desiccant is your friend! as well as one of those rubber-maid containers for storage. The good desiccant can be easily recharged/dryed out in an oven.
Don't pay for the whole "photo desiccant" stuff which is the same as others, just usually jacked up in price. Check out the ones labeled as for arts/crafts dry-flowers, or even gun cabinet labeled desiccant
