Post Man in Black
For about 7 months, I've been hooked on Johnny Cash tunes.

It's fucked...but I can't stop. On the iPod, at work, on the plane, in the car, in taxis, on the plane, at home, at the market, waiting in line at the movies, on the plane, etc.

The "Murder" disc of the "Love, God and Murder" set is in constant rotation in my player. I grew up with this stuff.

I didn't grow up with it, but never really explored his stuff. I'm 36 this year....and have just never given this type of music a chance. Only heard a few tunes, Ring of Fire, Walk the line, etc. But the really good stuff seems to be the older stuff and B-sides.

Try the set I mentioned. There's lots of really rough stuff on there. Almost as good as listening to vinyl.

His whole range of stuff is good for different reasons but I particularly love all the stuff he did on American. Lot of really great unreleased stuff on the Unearthed boxset including a great duet with Nick Cave.

We're using I Love you Because in our wedding next week when we're announced. Some of his older stuff is a little hokey, but it's a really sweet song, and Cash is man. He can be a lover, or a cold blooded killer.

The double disc set of Johnny Cash title "Personal FIle" is awesome! It's a collection of unreleased tracks of just the man in black and his acoustic guitar. alot of very poetic stuff that runs a little different in nature than most of his music, yet others on the set are classic structure. plus, you can't go wrong with the highwaymen.

i'm an old school country fan myself. lately i've been really digging the first album by Shooter Jennings. He's the only new musician that still holds the true country style. The rest of those newbie assholes should be filed under pop music instead of tarnishing the rep of good old country gold!

Check out Johnny Cash's cover of "I see a Darkness".

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MqodCNWqS8c

It's a Will Oldham, a.k.a. Bonnie 'Prince' Billy song...

If you have never hear Will Oldham check him out (Louisville native).

the original sun singles is where it's at. the enduring power of Cash's early work is its simplicity and spartan production values. That deep baritone voice, the stripped down musical accompaniment, and the word-pictures Cash painted with his lyrics. They don't make music like that anymore, literally!

As an aside, Sam Phillips was a genius.

Then you should check out the Bonnie Prince Billy's album entitled "I See a Darkness". It's an amazing album!
