Post Direct TV vs. Dish Network
Aright, now that I got my new TV, I obviously would prefer more HD channels.

Our local Comcast cable (which we currently have) offers about 10-12 max, and about half of them are pay channels which we don't get so.... most of them are just the major networks, they offer very few cable channels in HD.

Most of their HD programming is on OnDemand, which I really don't like and very rarely use.

So now I'm looking into switching over to satellite. What are the different opinions on them? Which is the best value for what you get?

I'm not going to be taking some giant premium package, I'd just like some of the cable channels in HD (primarily Discovery, maybe History, Food Network, VH1, Bravo, etc.) so a middle of the road plan would be perfect.

Anyone have either and have good or bad experiences with them?

Will your landlord let you mount a satellite dish?

Do you have Fios in your area?

I just got it at my house and have a ton of channels that I'm really enjoying.

I am debating the same thing. The new area I moved to does not have Comcast, instead its something called Media Com and they currently do not offer HD or On Demand. Im leaning towards dish and know nothing about Direct, anyone?

I have dish network. It's pretty good. I have the 80G DVR and almost everything I watch is in HD. Once you go HD it's hard to watch anything else. I started with the $60 package. I updgraded twice and I pay about $100 a month now. Mostly because I wanted to watch the USC games (almost every week the game was on a different channel). I haven't had any problems with it. Even when it rains or there's high wind, I've never had a problem with it. The one thing that sucks is that you have to sign a contract for 18 months I think. And if you start with a basic package, there's not a lot of channels. Well, there's a lot of channels just stuff you won't want to watch. And I'm not talking about Discovery. These are the kind of shows I like to watch. If you have any specific questions, feel free to ask.

I think you'll be good whichever way you go - just getting away from Comcast is all that matters!

My mom had Dish, I had Direct. I liked Direct TV more, almost never went out (when dish network DID on the same days/storms, my mom would call to ask) and I still like it and have no issues with it. Maybe Dish Network improved since I last heard anything about it from someone I know, but everyone I know who had switched to Direct TV anyway.

Dude, I did. Opening night. It was pretty f'ing awesome.

So I checked and we can't get Fios in our neighborhood, which angers me to no end. And I doubt we will be able to get either satellite company. So I guess I'm stuck with Comcast and it's like 2 HD channels.
