Quote:
If zombies actually existed, an attack by them would lead to the collapse of civilisation unless dealt with quickly and aggressively.

That is the conclusion of a mathematical exercise carried out by researchers in Canada.

They say only frequent counter-attacks with increasing force would eradicate the fictional creatures.

The scientific paper is published in a book - Infectious Diseases Modelling Research Progress.

In books, films, video games and folklore, zombies are undead creatures, able to turn the living into other zombies with a bite.

But there is a serious side to the work.

In some respects, a zombie "plague" resembles a lethal rapidly-spreading infection.

In their study, the researchers from the University of Ottawa and Carleton University (also in Ottawa) posed a question: If there was to be a battle between zombies and the living, who would win?

Professor Robert Smith? (the question mark is part of his surname and not a typographical mistake) and colleagues wrote: "We model a zombie attack using biological assumptions based on popular zombie movies.

"We introduce a basic model for zombie infection and illustrate the outcome with numerical solutions."

On his university web page, the mathematics professor at Ottawa University says the question mark distinguishes him from Robert Smith, lead singer of rock band The Cure.

To give the living a fighting chance, the researchers chose "classic" slow-moving zombies as our opponents rather than the nimble, intelligent creatures portrayed in some recent films.

"While we are trying to be as broad as possible in modelling zombies - especially as there are many variables - we have decided not to consider these individuals," the researchers said.

Back for good?

Even so, their analysis revealed that a strategy of capturing or curing the zombies would only put off the inevitable.

In their scientific paper, the authors conclude that humanity's only hope is to "hit them [the undead] hard and hit them often".

They added: "It's imperative that zombies are dealt with quickly or else... we are all in a great deal of trouble."

According to the researchers, the key difference between the zombies and the spread of real infections is that "zombies can come back to life".

But they say that their work has parallels with, for example, the spread of ideas.

The study has been welcomed by one of the world's leading disease specialists, Professor Neil Ferguson, who is one of the UK government's chief advisors on controlling the spread of swine flu.

"The paper considers something that many of us have worried about - particularly in our younger days - of what would be a feasible way of tackling an outbreak of a rapidly spreading zombie infection," said Professor Ferguson, from Imperial College London.

However he thinks that some of the assumptions made in the paper might be unduly alarmist.

"My understanding of zombie biology is that if you manage to decapitate a zombie then it's dead forever. So perhaps they are being a little over-pessimistic when they conclude that zombies might take over a city in three or four days," he said.

Oh ho ho, what a fool the body would be dead HOWEVER if the brain was intact the head could still be active, bite, infect, continue.

Psh, that study just shows shit we already knew! Slow zombies aren't dangerous as is, it's the lack of information, panic, fear and ignorance that spread the infection and eventual take over. Haven't these people watched "Dawn of the Dead" (original) or read "World War Z"?!?!?!

For anyone that is into Zombie lore you MUST read The Walking Dead. It is currently at issue #64 but all the back issues are available in trade paperbacks and hard cover volumes. Warning! These books are not for the faint of heart or those that like there Zombies filtered through a layer of slapstick. Don't get me wrong, I love the old campy Zombie stuff but The Walking Dead is some serious shit. These are the most real stories I have ever encountered on how people would survive in a world overrun by The Walking Dead.

I overheard a conversation in my comic book store. They were saying it is being serialized for TV. it will be on cable but I forget which channel. I'm always leery when they take something that has some complexity to it and adapt it to the screen. Depending on whose hands this is in at least a TV series would have more time to spend on the development of the characters which is what really drives The Walking Dead stories.

They're making a Walking Dead tv show, World War Z will be a movie, Zombieland is coming out soon so there's a number of zombie related things hitting.

Romero- I know you need the cash, but cmon, please, stop! I don't lick this dudes balls just because of what he did in the past which was genius. I don't think he's made anything worthwhile since like, Creepshow? I want him to stop because I'd rather remember him for his flurry of awesome movies vs. his recent junk.

Yeah, what he said.
Talk about beating an undead horse.

I feel the same about him as I do Raimi. Both of them are stuck on pedestals and revered and you'd best not say a word against either for fear of blasphemy.
I actually walked out of Romero's last film. I have never walked out of a film in my entire life, I may have turned the channel, but never in a theatre.

It's going to be on AMC.

And I'll grant you that Romero has been milking it for a while. :)

I'm addicted to playing Nazi Zombies on Call of Duty.

Zombies are serious business! You can't be too well prepared for them.

Looking to skip Romero's next flick as the last two were eh. I'm really looking forward to this World War Z adaption to film but not holding my breath. Zombie films lately need to stop trying to make fast intelligent zombies, over doing the gore/plot, and stick to simple scariness.

Well World War Z SHOULD be slow zombies, they are in the book. I'm iffy on a movie, if it was done in a non-narrative way I might be more interested, presented more like a history lesson vs. a story with a main character, hero, etc. like the book is.

I like fast zombies here and there. I like both, both can be fun, but prefer slow because I think more interesting situations can come from them.

I'll see Romero's crap because I ALWAYS do. What cheeses me off is his fucking OUT OF DATE bullshit social messages. Cmon! Fucking shit! Garbage like "He's only human" "Well maybe that's the problem" no that's not from one of his but it might as well be. How about the end of "Land..." As the zombie Big Daddy (who has emotions?!?!) walks off and is targeted our human hero says "No....just let him go....he's just looking for a place to call home" or some crap. THAT MOTHER FUCKER WILL EAT YOU LATER IDIOT, SHOOT IT SHUIISIJSDTIYIY !@@!!! I almost crapped outa my ears laughing at that garbage!

Anyway, sorry, I can go on about Romero sometimes, but it's because I love/hate him so much.

I liked the look or cinematography of Land of the Dead. It didn't try to be too futuristic, and some of the characters had merit. I like the scenes where they were out in the countryside, or by the waterfront. The appeal with zombies movies (to me at least) is when it's dark and you never know when a slow moving stray will come out of nowhere. The sense that you're never safe.

You can pretty much lose all the social commentary crap if the truth be told for me at least. I got it in Night of the Living Dead (which was very fitting for the time), I also got it in Dawn of Dead (again fitting) after that please stop with all the convoluted story lines of Zombie intelligence and emotion. I prefer to think of them as ruthless one track minded creatures. Deeper things with the humans, not with the zombies is the way to go. I don't think Romero is listening though.

This is the part where I go (about making a Zombie movie) and use the line from Lock Stock and say: "Fuck it I think I'll make it myself!"

Really? I wasn't into the look for "Land..." all that much, but I didn't HATE it. I enjoyed "Dairy..." much more, but it was still just junk.

I remember, too, when Romero was being looked at to direct the Resident Evil movie. Glad he didn't, not that RE was choice film, but if there would have been a way to make it worse it would have been putting an out of touch director in the chair of a film based on a video game. Again, I LOVE Romero, outside of zombies I love Martin, Crazies, Creepshow, his classic work is just that, classic. But I still have my eyes open enough to see when crap is being presented to be by anyone.

Zombieland looks really fun, and that's all I hope from it. I like having FUN zombie movies, like "Shaun..." as well as more serious ones. It's sad there's so much crap, though.

My biggest pet peeve with zombie films is when they try to make them "angry" or seem "evil" ugh! They're supposed to be MINDLESS, I find a blank stare a lot creepier than some "grraaarrgghh!!" angry/hungry face. Also I get tired of corpses being SUPER mutilated and rotten. Some after only a day or 2 of being dead, cmon! I think a slight change of skin tone and blank-ish eyes are all you need. Especially in a case of "freshly" infected.

I can go on, and have, so I'll try to stop hahahaha. They're just so much fun though! I guess I'm pretty into any sort of outbreak or event that can possibly wipe out human existence and how one might survive though.

I thought Land was decent, and could barely make it through Diary. I think the biggest problem isn't that Romero is out of touch because he's getting older, but because he's had a couple large gaps between films in the last 15 years (7 between The Dark Half and Bruiser, 5 between Bruiser and Land). Diary felt like he was more impressed with shooting digitally, and didn't pay much attention to other things (acting, script, effects, just to name a few).

Then again, I love the guy's work. I'm not too proud to admit that I was in the Pittsburgh area this last weekend and made a point of going to the Monroeville Mall and the Evans City Cemetery, where I couldn't help but get a few pictures mimicing the scenes of Night of the Living Dead shot there. NERDY AND PROUD.
