 Re: NON-Detolf glass cases
Fabian, your cases are awesome!
I would like some of these but for now I have to live with my detolfs because they are a cheap method to display toys behind glass. I'm also hating the dust though!

 Re: NON-Detolf glass cases
man mark you really do HATE them! i think they look nice for the cost. though i think the lights to put in them cost just as much as the detolf itself. urghh. living dead wrote: silver_lining_man wrote: soooooooo.... exactly why do you hate detoifs. i mean, it's just basically glass, shelf space for toys, and it's not very space consuming... i don't know, they have worked for me. i do want the branch to something that can consume all of the collection in one swoop. i'm sorry, but i can't see the reasoning behind "hate" here, and a shelving unit is really the last of my worries (when it comes to that strict of a mindset). I'm going to chime in with my HATE of the Detolf! They let a shitload of dust in from the cracks in the door part. I fucking HATE dust. Also they are fairly small. And that is why I HATE them!! I have three and can't wait to smash them once I get something better!

I also hate them and have gone on to no end why, so here I go again spreading my hate since someone asked - They look sterile/cold/like a museum - I don't want to live in a museum - I enjoy picking up my toys once a week and dusting. Like tending to a bonzai, I like to tend to my collection - They're ugly and small - I prefer horizontally displayed collections vs. vertically ANYWAY, for an example of what I DO like for display, see Thrashout's shop. Thouhg they also have glass cases you seem to forget that because of all the warm feeling wood used. I like my collection/house/life to NOT resemble something cold and sterile, I prefer warmer furniture and stuff.

 Re: NON-Detolf glass cases
i had an idea yesterday, to just put display case in your local craigslist, there was a few very nice cases near me, but in the $200 range, one was similar to a detolf, had cuts in the top for lights, and the back glass was actually a mirror, and enough room, pegs for 6 shelfs...... check your local craigslist you might fingd something good!

 Re: NON-Detolf glass cases
This is an old ass pic but its a ginormous Toys R Us display cabinet from when by bro worked there in the 90's. Best B-day gift he ever gave me. I'm in the process of using it for my vinyl stuff. My JOE collection is near and dear to me but I'm currently converting my basement into my "vinyl toy hangout" area so in plastic bins they go,,for now. ooze-it wrote: I got mine from a TRU manager when they were remodeling. They are worth at least $1500-$2000 ea. I had to have a lock smith make new locks and keys since the store kept the originals and they couldn't be duplicated. That was a little pricey. Also, I had to wire a new cord onto one of the 5 I had, because they had damaged the wire/plug. I just sold one not to long ago for $1,500. I am looking to sell 1-2 more possibly. TGB

 Re: NON-Detolf glass cases
Yeah, Craiglist is always ebb'in and flow'in with interesting display cases. Actually, if you just search the furniture section with "display" you get a couple more hits than "display case", because some people call them shelves or bookcases, or whatever.

 Re: NON-Detolf glass cases
How are these being lit? At first it looked like the ceiling lights were doing it, but some of the lower shelves seem too bright for the ceiling to be doing that.

 Re: NON-Detolf glass cases
not exactly "cozy" in the looks department, but I love this thing. I have just one for all my RxH stuff (almost 200 pieces with room to spare). I don't have a problem with dust, and with only the front door made of glass, I don't have to worry about sunlight on the clears and stuff. It has a lock and key too. lighting can be tricky, but I'm 100% fine without it--I prefer natural light or residual lamp/room light rather than something beaming down on it. feels good to me. my brother came down to visit and saw my collection for the first time. his mouth hung open and he was like "that's a lot of toys"...then he asked me where I got the cabinet from. he really dug it. I plan to get a very long rectangular piece of japanese fabric to drape over the top, to scroll down each of the sides for a little more style and color.

Normally I like the longer wider cases but I really like that case. Where did you get it from? I like that it has a lock which would be great for me since I have a 5 and a 2 year old and my 2 year loves getting into everything. Also will you post a picture of yours, I'd like to see what it looks like in a more realistic setting. Thanks

 Re: NON-Detolf glass cases
It's ASPVIK from IKEA. I'd also like to see a photo of it filled with toys.
Too bad it isn't available in black.

 Re: NON-Detolf glass cases
^ godspeed, I'll get a picture up tonight or early tomorrow. I might have one floating around here...let me check.
yeah, it would've been nice in different finishes, but I like the white; it let's the colors from the collection take the show, plus it reflects light a little better so it doesn't seem as dark in the back of the case.

 Re: NON-Detolf glass cases
All are fairly expensive, but this place has a whole bunch of super nice glass displays. Plus a few of them have little halogen lights on each shelf which is a great feature. http://www.displaycabinets.us.com/displ ... p?ID=24065

 Re: NON-Detolf glass cases
Funny this thread came up. I was in IKEA looking for a small/simple display case. I actually have an old medicine cabinet they used to sell in 2000/2001. Small, blue and they had a choice between a mirrored glass front and a clear glass front. I got one with clear glass, mounted it on my wall, and it's where I display all of my "A-list" Microman stuff. For my needs, this is perfect. But man, going back to IKEA in 2009/2010, there's nothing equivalent of this. And I even forgot the name of the darned thing so I can't scope it out on eBay. Heck that top shelf is a small wood shelf I made because I can't find glass sized for it. What I think would also be cool is a small all glass case that can be placed on top of a bookshelf. Like those glass pastry cases that some coffeeshops have, but priced for consumers. Heck, where do those stores get them? I'd really like something that can be a small diorama sized item that won't take up too much space and can easily be moved around. And a fishtank does not count Oh and I spotted this on NYC Craigslist. The ad says "The store used these display cases to display jewelry and other items for sale." Yeah, right. It looks like a food storage cabinet; who would sell jewelry in that?

OK, so this is my cabinet as of today. *Blankity Blank*
a shelf shot. I think this is from just the sunlight in the room. it goes a long way. and you can see the ocean of figures--each shelf can hold about 40 6" RxH figures--probably a few more if I took the riser out and scooched them together. but anyway, you get an idea. I love it.

 Re: NON-Detolf glass cases
yup! and thanks! there is a slight gap around the top and bottom of the door (you can adjust how high or low it will sit when completed), but that doesn't present a problem--plus they gotta air out anyway. I open this up about every other day so any little bit of dust that gets in is my fault and doesn't add up to much or get far in any case.
