I seem to go through phases were I don't listen to music much...but I don't know why...I absolutely love the stuff.

I'm happy to see the trend carry over into my kid. She plays piano and can remember a song after hearing it once or twice.

She even taught herself the Godzilla theme on the piano.

Kiss - Black Diamond (from Alive).

As a 7 or 8 year old, this song solidified my life long love for guitar driven rock.

I totally hear you about going through phases. I used to listen to / seek out new stuff constantly. Now I can go days without listening to anything.

In kid news, when my 2 year old wakes up we hear him singing the Ultraseven song from his room. And when he hears the real song he swings his arms through the song and pumps his fist at the seven seven seven part. He used to demand I play it over and over in the car on the way to daycare. Lately he demands Devo since he's familiar with them from yo gabba gabba. I hope these aren't songs that change his life, but it's not a terrible way to start.

Radiohead - Let Down

I was into much harder music... industrial stuff, hardcore, etc. I owned 25 Nine Inch Nails CDs. I wore spiked cuffs and big pants.

Then 1997 rolls around. I've changed schools and I'm going to graduate soon and Radiohead's OK Computer finds its way into my hands. This song in particular spoke to me like my music had not before. And it still does. The whole album does. My music tastes rather quickly shifted. My lifestyle even shifted after that. As I started working after school and felt more detached and rutted than ever, the song (and album) spoke to me more.

I don't own any NIN CDs anymore. But I just got teared up listening to this song again

Stay Free-The Clash

It was mid 80s--when me and a few kids in high school in Manila started listening to a music selection of punk, hardcore and new wave stuffs via "pirate radio" WXB 102. It had a 1 Kilowatt transmitter so, their signal was pretty fucked up, we thought all those "noise" / distortions were part of the music.

The station opened different doors for me in terms of different genres in music. Ended up liking The Clash until now...

It was during this era when I started buying cassette tapes, a handful of vinyl records and music-relatedshirts. We'd make one if its not available locally or don't have the money, or atleast "improvise".

I can't say that any one song changed my life, but when I was four my parents gave me a portable record player and two albums. One was a record of classic Disney movie songs and another was a classical disc with Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue" on one side and Tchaikovsky's "1812 Overture" on the other. Pretty good introduction to western music for a four year old. I played those records into the ground. They launched a lifelong obsession with all of the world's musics. So I guess I owe people like Louis Armstrong and Dean Martin for singing those corny old Disney songs. How this leads to punk rock and J.S. Bach is another story which I won't bore you with. 8)

Dean, we have had nearly the exact same experience, except instead of Disney as the second record it was The Beatles White Album. Oh, and my Gershwin had An American in Paris on the B side, which built my understanding of how music could be made to sound like anything, including a traffic jam.

As a teenager, that I loved Nina Simone was a carefully hidden secret. While Feelin' Good has recently gotten overplay from certain reality shows, there's nothing like her growling voice to Lift my spirits.

How that relates to my love of Radiohead's Bones is beyond me, but there are so many genres of music that affect me that I can't narrow it to just one.

When I was 9, I heard Black Sabbath’ Iron Man for the first time in a hockey room and was hooked for life.
A few years later – DK’s Religious Vomit and the couple minutes of jolly good time following that song gave me another direction,
until Skinny Puppy’s Cleanse Fold and Manipulate, as a whole.

Also, around those years, Night on Bald Mountain by Mussorgsky shatered my brain.

Nirvana : Territorial pissing
The ventures : the cruel sea
Black Sabbath : paranoid
Motorhead : ace of spades
Ramones : bonzo goes to bitburg
Pixies : The Sad Punk
Doors : Break on Through

Slim Skit by Wiz Khalifa....

listen here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jRae-d5aqO8
.... the lyrics are short, but he pretty much sums it up, pretty funny too!

I was 16-17 when I first heard most of these songs. I can't really say for sure how they changed my life but I'm pretty certain they were a big chunk of the soundtrack to good and bad times which are long forgotten by now. I remember all the music though, and still own and listen to the cds every so often.

Song to the Siren - This Mortal Coil
When Mama was Moth - Cocteau Twins
Five Ten Fiftyfold - Cocteau Twins
Adoration - Cranes
To Here Knows When - My Bloody Valentine
Soon - My Bloody Valentine
Belle Epoque - In the Nursery
Throwing Back the Apple - Pale Saints
Along the Avenues of Hell - Kirlian Camera
Everyday is Halloween - Ministry
