I was a huge tick geek. Ben Edlund was from two towns over.
I still have the Tick omnibus that was released and signed by all of the people involved. A treasure from my childhood.

thats rad! i was pretty serious about the tick as well. somewhere i have this weird error/variant tick figure where the torso is made of green plastic, but everything else is blue. i really loved that first run of tick comics.

I should specify though
this hobby, maybe collecting toys, most likely collecting in general, absolutely yes
I collect so many things and I'm always getting interested in new things. there are so many fascinating things out there, so many things that I find inspiring and culturally important that I think should be preserved. I should have probably gone into museum/library studies or something. I'm not one of those people who limits himself to one or two things. sometimes it's hard because I get spread so thing with all of it, but I do my best to keep as focused on multiple things as I can. I usually say I collect collections.
deep down I honestly hope that for anything you can think of that there is someone out there who collects it and keeps examples in good condition. I'm really just fascinated by die hard collector culture.
I honestly think with some people that collecting is in their blood. for some it's just a hobby, for others it's more. for me, it's something I've always done, and something I always see myself doing, because I enjoy it, but also just because it's my nature.
I remember being about 4-5 years old and I got a big manila envelope and started collecting all the comics from Bazooka bubble gum wrappers. once a had a bunch, it only made me want more, and so I started buying cases of Bazooka. at one point I must have had well over 1000 comics. I don't know what ever happened to them all. I'm sure my mom threw them out or something.
God knows how many things there are since then, and I rarely give up one thing go to start another. I just try to horde it all. I'm such a packrat.
^^^^^^^^^^^^
What he said, skylar, you summed it up for me completely and so well, i'll just let you talk for me, too. been collecting something since i was six years old and ima=gine i will till the day i die.
the only thing that gives me thought is, "what will happen to all of it?"
i thought maybe in my will i could specify that everyone who has ever done a trade with me on here could pick thru or thought of leaving my underground and handmade book collection to the comic art museum or donate the whole lot to salvation army and let it all scatter to the wind, which, come to think of it, might not be a bad way to go, since that is the way i'll be going myself!
when i'm feeling all artsy-fartsy i think, man, it would be cool to have all my vinyl toys boiled down and then have my body encased in it in a solid rectangle, sort of a plastic coffin or a modern day mummy with one word carved on each side of the box:
"He" 'Lived" "In" and "Plastic"
and then donate it to some museum and let them deal with it.

So I found this old post and thought it would be interesting to see where you folks are at today, as it's approximately halfway to 10 years already! Of those of you who are still around and voted/posted here in 2008, how has your prediction held up so far?

I'm sure I'll slow down eventually. I collected the other vinyl for years and that really slowed down as I lost interest in dj'ing....but I never got rid of my collection. I guess i'm just a collector at heart, Hopefully all of us will have mini museums (or big ones) in our old age. Like the Citizen Kane movie..... Well it definitely was wishful thinking! Where there is a will there is a way and yeah that break never truly happened. Now I'm just focused on vintage.

I love the whole idea of collecting these toys. It's not just The toys its the thrill of the hunt the changing of displays the fun pictures all of it. I enjoy collecting so I don't think I can ever quit only taper down.

Re: Do you see yourself collecting toys at this level in 10
I dont know how I missed this thread five years ago but here I still am, but my collecting was probably at its peak when this thread was first posted. Some really bad stuff has happened and some really good stuff too and that has changed the way I buy tremendously, having a daughter now really changed it the most. My buying is down to almost nothing, I only buy things I really want now or have been looking for for a long time. I still have stuff in boxes that I never opened and really need to let it go, but I am so busy with work these last three years I dont have time to put it up for sale!

I think the level that I am collecting right now will only go up in the next ten years.

Re: Do you see yourself collecting toys at this level in 10
Who knows... With age -might- come more money, which I could see going towards art instead of toys. Unless we get a much larger place, there's also a finite space I can use, which has pretty much reached its peak now. So purchases? Sure. But they'll come with equal sales (a pattern I am already trying to respect...). And Shirahama, I am sure many of us are really curious about what's in those boxes...

I've been collecting Pushead stuff since the 1980s. As long as there are things I don't have (and thankfully, there are ever so many) I'll still be trying for them.

Re: Do you see yourself collecting toys at this level in 10
I went from having to donate plasma and doing drug studies to buy one toy to having a steady job that has afforded me one full room plus another half room dedicated to collecting. All within 10 years. As a look to advance at my job I'm sure to continue to growing my collection at a stupid rate.
Good thread revive
