I'm not in Japan, but I have the mobile yahoo auction in my iphone just by bookmarking it. I was in Japan for the past 7 years and that's what I used.

Yeah that's my issue - won't let me register to the Japanese iTunes store so can't download it. I'm assuming adding it to my app folder directly would work...

If memory serves, you might need a Japanese credit card to register with the store. Somehow when I was in Japan I was able to get US apps as well. I don't really remember.

Anyway, my point is that you don't need the app. The mobile site works just fine.

Hmm, it crashing on me was what prompted me wanting the app... Rakuten makes its apps international (though you need a Japanese cell to bid...). You have to wonder at the lengths many Japanese companies go to -not- to sell overseas.

You won't be able to just drop the app into your folder if someone else gets it with their iTunes account. The apps are signed to the ID that purchases them, so you'd need to somehow get it with your own account.

I feel like I remember reading about how to make the iTunes Store think you're in a different country, but I can't remember how to do that.

maybe change your dns settings on your phone to a japanese address and try to get it? might work

You actually need to have an apple account in Japan, so enter an address there + a credit card. Which I both have, but for some reason it won't even give me the option to switch to the Japanese store anymore...

In that line of thought, I find it uber weird that Japanese sites won't let me use non-Japanese credit cards but they don't care about confirmed addresses, which you only exchange by pm. So they don't want foreign fraud, but fraud within Japan is ok...
