After seeing Metallica inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, I was wondering if we'd ever see slayer i there. Now I know their is no way in hell slayer would be inducted, but it brought me to the eternal metal head question

Slayer, but Metallica's first 4 album's are all great. The fact that Metallica hasn't made a good album since is why Slayer wins.

Metallica only had 3 good albums. "Death Magnetic" is terrible, I don't care what anyone says.

SLAYER

The "why" is because they have pretty much always stayed the course...as stated above, Metallica's first four albums are classics and helped define modern metal---but then they sort of became a "hard-rock" band for another three or four records, totally lost focus as they "found themselves" on St. Anger. I think Death Magnetic is step toward the sound that made them what they are, but they are such a massive machine now that their edge is a little blunt. Also, when Metallica covered Bob Seeger, they pulled in a whole new crowd of fans, many of whom would run screaming in terror from Slayer's sonic onslaught.


A good sub-poll might be which is better: Reign in Blood or Master of Puppets - same year out, same band members, way different approach to songwriting...this is more challenging, as they are both metal reference points.

When I was younger, I would have chosen Metallica because they had a message.

But now that I'm older, that message is less important than the machinegun music.

I had to pick SLAYER because of their persistence of vision and their ability to keep within their own style and still constantly blow me away with their brutal riffs and vocals.

Metallica as was stated here...came out very strong and had a major influence on me in the 80s-90s...but they have just fizzled, they remain relevant...just not metal enough for me.

No one will ever say SLAYER sold out.

look, I like Slayer as much as the next guy. I mean, I fucking LOVE some Slayer, don't get me wrong.

but if I had to rank the Big Four, it's gotta be:

1. Anthrax
2. Slayer
3. Metallica
4. Megadeth

and I would even knock out Megadeth if I could stick someone else in there, like Pantera for instance.

I think Metallica had some good records, but I've always thought they were a little overrated. They take themselves a bit too seriously at times.

I cant really pick though Metallica will always hold a special spot for me. As will Slayer though. Saw metallica on the Justice tour and saw Slayer on the clash of the titans tours. Both blew my mind as a 11 year old.

I can say that I will pick metallica over megadeth. Although I will say Rust in piece is, in my opinion, a flawless album. I still listen to it as much today as I did in 90. I think a album by album comparison of the 2 is better than Slayer vs metallica. Slayer has not nearly put out as much garbage as metallica.

As I've been playing Metallica's Guitar Hero as of late, I came to the conclusion that I only ever
realy likes Ride the lightning. Probably because it was such a nice Exodus rip off

i had to go slayer on this round...

I went with "Reign.." other than just loving it (love MOP too) when someone I know who ISN'T in to metal asks for an example or someone calls stuff like Poison metal and I tell them it's not, they say "well what is?" I bust out "Reign In Blood" and shut them up.
