i just want to add in here that if you post your stuff on the board, be prepared for criticism.
if people don't like your work, you're still putting it out there for people to view and react to.
interesting reading here...let's keep this debate going

Bottom line: you buy a $40 figure, slap some paint on it, throw it up in the sales thread for $120....you're taking advantage of the board...and people will call you out.

True...but there is a big difference from people giving good crit ("I really like how you used the blue to make the yellow eyes pop..." or "I don't like how the red and violet are too close in shades...they kind of blend too much..."), or just spouting off crap ("Awesome work!! Do more please!! " or "That sucks!!"). The lack of good criticism is what makes me not want to post anything up. Instead, I just keep it on my flickr and bring it with me on release days to show the gang. I'm not going to waste your time or mine and post something that get's one liners as comments that have no meaning or are helpful in anyway.
Besides, as a paintbrush user, I am already looked down upon by the masses because it is not "the way" it is done. I'll just keep on going and keep it underground. If you want to see what I've done, it's not hard to find.

Bottom line is, if you like the custom, pm the maker with a price...and start haggling. If you want to post it for sale, take it to the bay. If you post it for trade, don't ask for something outrageous.

Not unless it's an unlicensed bootleg, in which case the copyright holder is being cheated. Japanese monsters have been licensed for toys at least since Godzilla, specifically by the copyright holders. Witness Tsuburaya Productions aka Yamanaya. The fact that this is true to this day indicates something more like the opposite of disrespect as I see it, being the ongoing love of the toys and the monsters.

LOL well you make some good points and make them well. I especially appreciated your comments about wanting something Japanese, not something made in Japan and co-branded by a fanboi. Well actually that's my evil re-interpretation of what you'd said but you know what I mean.

Oh i completely agree with you bert. I think the majority of people tend to avoid the customs forum these days because of the very thing you're talking about.
If you're going to criticize it, tell the person why it sucks/is good in more than one line. it's annoying to wade through five pages of praise as well. For a while there, everyone loved everything that was being posted, and frankly that just seems ridiculous to me.
you can't like everything all of the time, and the nice thing is we all have our own taste.
As for painting production pieces, I'm against it. blanks were made for this reason.
Parka mentioned that devilman evil. I'd love to know how many of those exist in their original paint scheme now. They sat on S7 for ages, and it took me almost a year to finally get mine.

Is it known that a lot of the Devilman Evils were painted over, or is this just an educated guess based on the fact that it was slow to catch fire?
Funny how that can be. I saw the WF "Toxic Avenger" Chaosman on the shelf at S7 for quite awhile. It seems that now that it's harder to land, people appreciate its crazy paint scheme more.
