No shit. These conventions have gotten out of hand. Now most people are charging for the autograph and then charging for a pic with them with your own camera!!! That's why Cinema wasteland is awesome. The guy who runs it won't invite anyone who gouges there fans.

True, but most conventions have started offering the "uber awesome" passes so you don't have to pay for autographs.. yet somehow you always have to pay for one or two.

With that being said.. are there any decent horror movies in the 80's style that have come out or are coming out?

There is a new movie called -Animal- that came out recently. I liked it quite a bit for what it was and it does have the old monster in the woods feel down really well. It's not a great movie by any means but the special effects are awesome(especially the non-cgi monster)and it is a blast to watch with friends. Betting on who dies next it always fun for me. Don't expect a masterpiece and you should have a good time with it. Oh and zero nudity/sex in it for those of you who watch movies with younger peoples.

Might try -The Jungle- tonight. Looks like a found footage type flick and the trailer was cool.

Yes it's a "The Thing" rip off, but that's what it is supposed to be and it's a big FU to Universal for cutting out all the non-cgi effects from the "The Thing"prequel.

I watched The Jungle and it was pretty much all boring until the end. Like blair witch in the jungle with less drama. Wouldn't suggest it to anyone else unless you really like night-vision jungle scenes.

That's a shame.. so many people trying to copy success when the only reason the original was successful was because it was new. BWP bored the hell out of me, but at least they tried something different.

Hong Kong ghost genre flick Rigor Mortis got a US dvd release yesterday. I mentioned this film before. Fun, playful. Some great cinema. If you understand the ideas of Tibetan Buddhism or dmt release in the brain at death it definitely makes the movie more fun and meaningful. Even in death life is a dream.

I saw it and I actually enjoyed it. Kind of slow and very little talking but the soundtrack was wonderful and the story itself was fun to figure out. Enjoyed the cinematography too. I know the reviews are pretty poor but I think that's the result of many thousands of people watching the movie ONLY to see Scarlet J finally naked and not being the kind of people who enjoy a somewhat deeper sci-fi movie.

I watched Beneath last week and it was a fun flick. Actual acting and a good script with some impressive gore. It's like a cross between a "real" movie and a horror movie. I was impressed by pretty much all of it. Even the 'figure it out for yourself' thing they did rather then just spelling it out for everyone was neat.

Did you see the price? $80 Fuck that!

That's the "deluxe" edition haha. They have this with the 40 extra minutes for $24. Totally worth IMO

I don't need it two weeks early or numbered. The extra bonus disc would be nice, but I am not shelling out 50 for that and an art book.

Nightbreed is one of my all time favorite movies so I went all out. I hope the extra disc is worth it. Plus it has a disc with the original cut on blu ray which is exclusive to this run.

Awesome news! I just hope it doesn't end up silly (and soap-opera-ey) like most of the other monster series currently running. I remember not liking the flick the first time I saw it, but then I gave it another chance, and another. With each viewing, my appreciation grew, and now I love the flick.

Personally, I love it. Gremlins is in my Top 5 movies of all time. Joe Dante is on board as well according to another report. I read awhile ago that they would only be willing to do a sequel if it was not CGI based. Reading the article, it sounds like the studio gave in and we will have a Gremlins sequel with puppets instead of CGI!

Well, Gremlins is my favourite Christmas movie.

Okay, here is the thing. As much as I lament the remakes/rehashes/imaginings/sequels/prequels/reboots/etc., that is just rampant right now in the film industry, I can see potential for certain films to be good, or at least okay, when done right. But that also means a lot of staying true to practical effects and, let's face it, horror cheese, that epitomises those films in their original form. Frankly, that is something that they are just unwilling to do in the modern age. And that is fine with me; there is no question that the movie audience today has no clue (or interest) in those types of things - but then, just leave it well enough alone.

Here is the problem: it is not the 80s [as much as I might wish and pray that it were]. The simple fact is, movies like Gremlins, Hellraiser, Terminator, Evil Dead, Robocop, etc., etc., etc., were of a time that you can't just go back to. Yes, you can exploit the foundation material to make money, and squeeze the franchise out 'till you ruin it, but you will never be able to reproduce the same quality and timing of those films. There is a reason that kind of movie is not coming out today, because it just doesn't fly - in the same way as making a 3hr historical or biblical epic wouldn't have been received well then. Time change. You can't bring it back. And, as a result, they just have to change the basis of the movie too much to suit what 'the modern audience wants' that it will never reach or even come close to what the originals had.

Yes, I am looking at this through nostalgia-tinted glasses - I fully admit that; but you will never replace or mimic the 80s horror genre. It's far past time to develop something new. If you can't do that, then you probably shouldn't be making movies. And it is not just horror, you will never be able to do a movie like Karate Kid (drama?), Conan (adventures), Police Academy (comedies), Krull (sci-fi), or American Ninja (action) in this day either. Horror movie franchises just take the brunt of it because of their cult following. It is a complete marketing and creativity/development cop-out to just make a movie based off an existing film(s) with a proven audience.

What I am trying to say is, these movies - which I love - were of a particular time and era. They just simply aren't going to be effective or have the same impact today as they did back then. As much as I would hope to see more done with them, and love to see some new movies or realisations of some of these great stories, fact is, it is just not going to happen. I think in almost every case I would just rather see studios leave well enough alone then try and duplicate or continue on the past films. I love films of the 70s and 80s, with all of their warts and stink, but it's a mistake to believe they can be transferred to a cinematic release 30-40 years later. Not only have 1. movies changes in general, 2. effects become so different, 3. the movie-going audience looking and expecting different things, you are 4. putting these movies out there in an environment wherein 30-40 years of additional films have been released and are going to be compared/viewed in light of. And, on top of all this, there is the timing of the movie. Consider films like Rambo/Red Dawn just as some examples. The political background made these movies what they are. Why anyone could think to try and regain those same feelings now is absurd logic.

Short version - Hollywood is going to do what it wants to do anyways, and the sheeple will keep throwing enough money into crap to support bad ideas getting made, so it doesn't really matter what I think. I just wish there were some writers *and people in charge that had some original ideas to tell us.

I watch ever Christmas as well. It's my tradition. I hear ya on the remakes and reboots and yes 99.9% are garbage. Will they pour Michael Bay money into this and bastardize it like TMNT or Transformers? No. At least I hope not. I had the same reaction with the Predators movie and I loved it honestly. It had its flaws, but it was fun.

With Gremlins and the new Predator sequel coming out, they are not reboots though. They are sequels and I give huge props for this. The fact that Shane Black will be directing and penning the script along with Fred Dekker? What is not to love about a Predator sequel? Same with Gremlins, no CGI, original writer, director and producer on board? I think it will be awesome. I honestly think that they are going for the cult factor here and they want to keep Spielberg happy so they are going with puppets again. We are all definitely entitled to our own opinions and I agree with you that almost all reboots are garbage, but the fan boy in me can't help but be excited by this.

Oh don't mistake me. For all my general grump and curmudgeonlyness, I remain
a bit hopeful. I will always been a fan and generally just love movies, but they just make it so hard to be optimistic - even about sequels. I always keep an open mind, and there is that part of me that so wants stuff like this to be good, but recent travesties committed to the big screen just vastly outnumber anything memorable, and leave me groaning. For all that, I am still willing to most anything a shot (but thereby also reserve the right to complain ).

Have you checked out Hell Baby, Steve? It hits all those '80's horror notes very well, without dissolving into blind hepster-cum-marketing-team imitation. Plus, actual factual practical F/X.

Seems practical effects are now officially a hip thing - the 180 gram vinyl of the big budget genre film. Doesn't give me hope, necessarily, but there are far worse things to be trendy about..

I wouldn't say practical effects are trendy, but that's just me. I've always felt that CGI should be to enhance, not replace. Yes movies like pacific rim couldn't be made with CGI and I loved it. But something like Gremlins was made without CGI, well second had some, but the gremlins were practical. And you have the group that did the effects for the thing making a movie. Love it, but that's my opinion. Always hoping for the best with news like this.
