I've noticed some comments along the lines of you're either SxE/sober or a drunk fool. Those are two ends of the spectrum, but I think most people that are not straight edge/non-users live somewhere in the middle where their use doesn't affect their lives. So I have to call BS on the excuse that you don't do it so that you aren't a drunken fool at parties and can spend your money on other things. It's an absolutely fine life choice not to drink/smoke/drug - but you don't need to make up lame excuses for this choice. I never liked the straight edge label because it seemed to make a personal choice into a holier-than-thou pedestal.
And I saw someone say that drink/smoke/drug have been proven to be bad to your health. True on the smoking/drug count. However, moderate drinking (two drinks daily) has actually been shown to have a positive impact on your health.

im 28 and still straight edge. wtf? I , like most kids I know who still are, started when I was young and just never looked back. I have a seriously additive personality and just feel drinking is not for me. thats it. no grand reasons. I have no fear of bars or people who drink. I have never dated a girl who didnt drink. Im comfortable with who I am and usually dont need to explain myself. but I think straight edge as a whole is one of hte most misunderstood youth cultures ever...
Myth 1: the sex thing.
dude. edge kids are some of THE sketchiest dudes I know. that part of it has never really applied.
myth 2: straight edge kids dont know how to have a good time.
50% true. lots are socially awkward. but arent all punk kids?
myth 3: its a movement.
wrong. because if it is.. its the biggest failure of a movement ever. Its a personal decision and I just still have to have a good amount of friends who are/were.
Im not 16 anymore. I probably would not X-up but Love it when I see a group of young kids at a show doing so.
PS- I still need a varisty jackey. the sign of a true elder edgeman.

when i was 16 I was a total self righteous holier than thou prick. some would still say I am. but for reasons not associated with straight edge
but NT lets be honest. you just called someones reasons for a choice for why something wasnt for them as a "lame excuse". thats also your opinion and your welcome to it . just saying.

in my experience, straightedge kids, myself included, often know how to have a BETTER time.
it often seems that many people who drink/take drugs often feel dependent on them to have a good time (unfortunately). I on the other hand can make my own fun and make the best out of any situation.
more often than not we're a bunch of crazy motherfuckers who would totally implode if we drank/did drugs. so many people I've known will do totally ridiculous shit on their own, without the influence of drugs or alcohol. I can only imagine if their judgment was blurred - they're crazy enough when their heads are on straight.

Hey,that's not nice! If my arm wasn't fucked up you probably would have seen me flying across the stage at the Limp Wrist show! And I don't need a Fucked Up sticker anywhere when I already got the logo tattooed.
Damn kids!!!

That wasn't my intent - my intent was to say that it's generally not an either/or...so the reason/excuse doesn't really apply to the choice that someone makes. I'm not SxE, nor am I a bumbling drunk. For some people it might be that they can't control their consumption, and that is probably the best excuse for not using! But I don't view it as an applicable reason for those that CAN drink responsibly but choose not to. And with personal choices you don't need to have a reason other than "it's how I feel".
I didn't want to make people feel bad about their choice(s), or their reasons for their choices. I just didn't like the drunk/sober dichotomy that was beginning to develop.

I've been Straight Edge, and I guess I still am, but I don't announce it like I did in my younger years. I, like alot of other people here, never saw the appeal of it. Why get drunk? Why get high or stoned? Life isn't that bad (believe me, if you're here buying $100's worth of toys, your life is pretty damn good). There is so much beauty and wonder in this world why hell do you need to alter your perceptions to have a good time? Also like a few others said, I have an addictive perosnality- the few times I did drink as a Teenager I drank until I was sick and then drank some more. I've tried a sip of my girls drinks once or twice (she asked) and it tasted nasty and reminded me of being hungover.
So for me, there's no point. I can live without it.
As for music, that was never a thing for me, although I've seen some hadcore shows.
And for the Philadelphia people who were sXe- anyone know Chris Striegle<SP>?
Phil

in another odd twist, one of the guys who used to be in Limp Wrist in its earliest inception, had a crush on me. he would ask a female friend about me all the time and even though I was dating someone she would totally lead him on and not tell him, or even alert him to the fact that I wasn't gay. it progressed to the point where she and I had an argument because she insisted I was "being mean" by not going on a date with him!

15 and straight edged, because I have to be. j/k
I plan on staying straight edged though, i've had so many chances to have alchohol touch these lips, smoke a joint, etc. but I haven't taken any of those chances.
