I’m far more in favor of Wikileaks than against them. Also, there is another aspect of this folks are not understanding: In diplomatic circles, this kind of gossip happens all the time. Maybe not 100% as glib and blunt but far more glib than what the general public hears/reads about this stuff.

So to me, all that’s happened is the hoi polloi now knows how diplomacy works.

And the whole Iran aspect of this stuff (ie: it's not just Israel and the U.S. who wants them dealt with) is actually an amazingly cool thing. Mideast politics is 100% crazy and this at least shows the world that the issues in dealing with Iran are not bullshit. They are nuts and a threat.

Post Re: Wikileaks.
An interesting fact that the USA press generally ignores is that prior to the current batch of revelations, Wikileaks did what they could to carefully redact info that they thought might actually be harmful. I know, make of that what you will, but what's especially salient is that they repeatedly asked for the USA State Department's help in identifying information that really should be redacted, but State refused to cooperate. I can appreciate why given the USA's stance, but the point is that Wiikileaks at least made the effort. Without State's help they were on their own.

Call me an infidel on this.

Like Microman said it helps bolster and further the case for attacking Iran.

aka the NeoCon position. How convenient.

Not to mention Dean's articles listing Assange's very interesting pedigree complete with MIND CONTROL.

The only reason the Iranian issue is a an issue right now is the U.S. has blown it’s load of world credibility with Iraq and now Afghanistan.

In a more perfect situation, Afghanistan would have been dealt with immediately after 9/11, Iraq would have been kept at bay and then Iran could have been a second world target.

I know that all sounds profoundly cold and war-mongering. I am not. But it's not a “NeoCon” position to see a pseudo-theocracy like Iran developing nukes as a genuine threat.

Like I said, Mideast politics are wretched. And denying Iranian government is insane is just insane as well.

I was going to write a long post on the topic of Iran, but instead, let me just ask: Why do people think that the government of Iran is insane? Is it because of that jackass Ahmadenijad's antics? Something in the recent cable leaks?

It's because Ahmadinejad is really irrelevant. Ali Khamenei is the real power in Iran and thus the country is a bizarre mix of theocracy and some kind of pseudo “democracy.” Iran before the 1979 revolution was a monarchy (puppet government?) but religious rule in Iran has made the place just a nightmare.

Nicely discerned, and I agree 100%. Ahmadenijad is just the yapping lapdog of "the mullahs," and any talk of Iran being a "democratic" Republic was made obviously false with the rigged elections and subsequent brutal crushing of the protests in Tehran.

However I don't think the real powers that be are quite as insane as Ahmadenijad might make the rest of them seem. I think they have long-range plans and are biding their time these days while their influence in the Islamic world increases, and that of the House of Saud and the USA diminishes. I doubt if they actually have any intention of nuking Israel. That'd be suicide, anyway.

My money's on a nice Brie.
It still melts when it gets hot, but it's not as stinky as Camembert.

Brings a whole new meaning to the phrase "knob cheese" though, doesn't it? :D
(Hmm ... what if this only works on SWEDISH girls?
Better be careful anyway - it'll probably be illegal by midday tomorrow
to offer cheese to girls of ANY nationality.)

Post Re: Wikileaks.
Anyone been sticking with Dave Emory?

http://spitfirelist.com/for-the-record/ ... ddle-east/

I've only gotten halfway through this episode but he's bringing it all together. Rove is in Sweden orchestrating which cables to selectively release through Wikileaks, the leaked cables have been designed to destabilize the countries where the Muslim Brotherhood (buddies of the underground Fourth Reich) are most likely to gain power, and Obama (the patsy) is being set up for a major fall by the Republicans using the situation in the Middle East and some future terrorist event.

All in all, fun stuff and maybe even a teeny bit plausible. Of course, there's still the occasional crazier-than-usual tidbit in there, like Emory's assertion that Obama is a second-generation intelligence operative (must have missed that episode). Strongly recommended.

Also, regarding Assange's pending extradition to Sweden: everyone I'm talking to is talking about how this is going to pave the way for him to get scooped up by the US and sent to Guantanamo. How? He was an Australian citizen living in England, two of the US' closest allies. Why wouldn't the US have gotten him already? Wouldn't extradition to another country make it harder to get him here?

I think the suspicion has always been that these are trumped-up charges
(the case was basically already closed once,
it's reopening a knee-jerk reaction by a bewildered government)
and that the machinery was/is already in place for him to be extradited from Sweden to the US.

Assange's main enemy now is time, and the public's waning interest.
I guess that's why they're hanging on to some of the allegedly more revealing cables?

Anyway, it would be a huge embarassment for Britain to give him over to American authorities,
directly or indirectly,
and I hope our higher courts will have the good sense to overturn this decision.
