What was everyone's first show?
Mine was Rainbow (as in Ritchie Blackmore's) with Rose Tattoo (Ozzie skin-metal band).

Next show was Saxon - WHeels of Steel Tour.

Then AC/DC....which I threw up at.

Naw, that Probot is great.

Each song could easily have appeared in the early '80s. Unless you hate those '80s bands like Venom, VoiVod, Celtic Frost...or you just don't like Grohl.

Talking of comedic side projects like PROBOT, does anyone remeber REKTUM? THe supposed East German death metal band side project of Mary Mary from Gaye Bykers on Acid, along with some industrial heavyweight mates?

I like some Venom, just not all.

Bathory I do like though.

To be honest I only heard the probot that was released as a single.

First concert was Santana when I was 7.

Sorry to gibber on, BUT

TRUE VENOM STORY: I once saw Chronos from Venom, in his thign high cherry red docs, stride behind a porta-toliet block backstage at Donnington '84, and NEVER re-appear. I even went to look around there to see where he was, but he'd just disappeared! Spookilly Satanic, or so I thought at the time.

Didn't Venom basically invent black metal?

Also, I have a great FUCT deck, featuring that FUCT metal guy torching churches......Norweigan death metal stylee....a funny deck graphic.

mmmm......Turbonegro tiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiime!

Venom coined the term 'black metal' although they sound nothing like what is and was accepted as black meta. I think bathory laid down the groundwork. But venom were the instigators (sp)

oh yeah i've been listening to death from above 1979 too much recently.

Rose Tattoo kicked ass! They're like skinheads who listen to too much AC/DC. What a great first show.

My first show was a local SxE band called Blind Approach. There guitarist played with Agnostic Front after they broke up. I think I saw Metallica with The Cult around the same time (88-89 or so).

Rose Tattoo!!! Heh heh. Used to listen to them way back. They recently toured Oz world. Looking a little old now! Angry Anderson is a big kids charity worker these days.

Yeah, he was in Beyond The Thunderdome...the WORST of the Mad Max movies. As far as I'm concerned, there is only 2 Mad Max movies...not 3.

I almost did a full three pages on this, but then remembered I had work to do :) I listen to everything except shitty commercial stuff (no Top 40 Country, no American Idol). I was into anything weird or that rocked when I was a kid (mostly Death Rock (goth for you Brits), Punk/HC and Thrash Metal), was majorly into the Death and Black Metal scenes in the late 80's-mid 90's and now am back to listening to everything. Check out aquariusrecords.org, they are a store in San Francisco and is to music what Super 7 is to toys, and that means AWESOME!

A couple things I have not seen mentioned -

Longmont Potion Castle - Imagine a surreal Jerky Boys. Amazing prank call genius. Not music, but i listen to it all the time.

Elope - I listen to this Swedish bands 1st LP all the time. They get lumped in with the Stoner Rock crew, but they are much mellower than that implies and have a heavy Beatles influence. Great band. Didn't you put out an EP by them on Man's Ruin Frank?

THE FROGS!!!

Career Suicide - Amazing newish hardcore band that sounds like an 80's So Cal hardcore band, and not in a false tribute way, but like they could have been there. So good.

Stuff I saw mentioned -

I saw Napalm Death on here a couple of times. I love them. I was a fan in the old days, but I am one 10 times moreso now. I saw them play at the Key Club a year or two ago, and it was one of the best hardcore shows I have ever seen and this is from an old dirty L.A. punk. F'ing amazing.

I second Muton's comment on Steve Jones' radio show, which is great. The one Henry Rollins does on Tuesday night (also on 103.1) is incredible.

I also still listen to the old Goth, and have really been into the new Death Rock stuff, mostly from SF (The Vanishing is a great)

C.O.C. = awesome.

I also saw Death In June live and it bordered on a religious experience. Anyone here ever see Crash Worship live? Also incredible. Sunn O))) while on Vicodin and three beers was pretty good too :D

Not only do we all like cool toys, but our music tastes are cool too. Seems people who posted veer to the harder end of the spectrum. Amazing how a few bands totally overlapped for nearly everyone.

And Chad - that is my favorite song on the first Buckcherry album - makes me feel rock n roll when I drive to the office :)

In the words of Girlschool: "Cheers you lot!"

I'm seeing a lot of votes for one of my faves: Sonic Youth. You've got to love their power to utterly, dissonantly deconstruct it all, especially live!

Some others that come to mind...

DEADBOLT
Reverend Horton Heat
The Cramps
Dick Dale
Lords of Altamont
Swans
The Cranes
Daisy Chainsaw
Poison Idea
The Accused
Helium
That Dog
Mary Timony
Pram
P.J. Harvey
Cat Power
Ladytron
Blonde Redhead
Bikini Kill
Le Tigre
Heavens to Betsy
Sleater Kinney
Pizzicato Five
Bauhaus
The Cure
Siouxsie and the Banshees
Joy Division
Cocteau Twins
My Bloody Valentine
Kraftwerk
Violent Femmes
Tones on Tail
Lords of Acid
Meat Beat Manifesto
Future SOunds of London
Orbital
Aphex Twin
Stereolab
GG Allin (good for comic relief, if nothing else)
Hafler Trio
Crash Worship
Muslimgauze
Nurse with Wound
Coil
Onomatopoeia
Negativland
Einsturzende Neubaten
Lustmord
Throbbing Gristle
Psychic Television
Chris and Cosey
Merzbow
Melt Banana
Tom Waits
Clara Rockmore (Theremin music)

Anybody remember these Japanese hardcore bands that were around in the late '80s:

Lipcream
Gauze
Systematic Death
Outo

I have to dredge up some of my old records, that stuff was blistering!
