Post Re: the darkside has me pretty bad- oldskool jungle heads?
it is ironic that this thread was resurrected today..

randomly listened to goldie's "manslaughter - rider 96 proto" from reinforced's "above the law" compilation while cycling across london last night..

it reminded me why i will always love jungle/d'n'b...

it also got me thinking about digitizing all the cassette tapes i have from uk radio (pirate/bbc/kiss) & uk raves (mainly from '96 to '98)...and a ton of us-based mixtapes (mainly from '93-'99)

i ran into samba just before christmas & we discussed converting cassette to digital..

i will definitely post some up on this thread when i get around to it,,it will take some time though,,

gotta rescue my quality tape deck from my mother's house on my next visit to the us & i will be good to go..

John B...

ill never forget meeting John B. It was September 11th, 2001. The shit had already hit the fan and he was stuck at Dulles Airport Hotel (15 min-20 min from our apt in Centreville, VA). I got a call from my boy Karl K in Philly needing a real big favor.

John was supp to play in Philly on the 11th. (which obviously after the events of that day, no one went out that night--anywhere) and with all flights grounded John was trapped in VA.

His only way out of Dulles and the Commonwealth of Virgina, was the generosity of my then girlfriend (now wife) and her car, or who knows how long he would've sat in that hotel.

So, off we went up 95 North listening to his flock of seagulls cds with the highway signs reading AVOID NY MAJOR INCIDENT along the way. I dont think he really had a grip on what happened from what he said and how he acted..

One of the saddest days in our country's history was the same day i met John B.

I was lucky enough to live on Brick Lane in London between 1993 -1996 when the Blue Note opened in nearby Hoxton.

We pretty much went every week for a good two years.

Photek, Peshay, Wax Doctor, Alex Reece, Doc Scott, LTJ Bukem and DJ Krust were amongst my favourites.

They had to stop the music on opening night when the plaster hadnt dried and the ceiling started to crumble.

At the same time the club hosted some awesome trip hop nights with Mo Wax, Howie B and Major Force West from Japan.

Good times and good memories.

Not necessarily Old Skool but if anyone in LA is interested, Dieselboy is headlining at my brother's club LA BEATDOWN at the Music Box on January 22.

Here's the flyer.

Its a full night of Drum n Bass and Dubstep

any track off the whitehouse label was good
94-96 best jungle
was just listening to some tracks tonight that i found
must have been early 90s breakbeat hardcore-techno(which they all could be broken down to jungle - house - happy hardcore - ETC)
funny how back then nothing was categorized like it is now

Today I'm off and continuing my digitizing of old records. Just digitized DJ Gunshot Soundboy/Soundtest on No U Turn. Everyone remembers him for Wheel and Deal and the subsequent remixes, but this record is a pure ragga GEM! Funny I never really broke it out in sets but I wish I had! Soundtest is the better of the two, but I could not find a youtube clip. Here is Soundboy:

Post Re: the darkside has me pretty bad- oldskool jungle heads?
Awesome thread. Im sure I could dig up some serious pics.

Chicago had one of the sickest dnb scenes ( I got into it in '99) when things were getting harder and darker, The Nine anyone?.

From mixtapes made on Geminis in my parents basement to opening for Bad Company in Chicago it was a fun ride indeed. I have been on a hiatus since '05 and honestly I feel today like its half the scene it used to be IF that. There is so much awful dubstep thrown into mixes, and what used to be.. just seems to be long gone.

The days of trainspotting and trying to read the titles on dubplates scribbled in sharpie, or sneaking a recording of a set onto mini disc haha.

Today is twitter egos and selling out to shitty genres, its disgusting. As much as I wanted to see Damian play at that show tomorrow in LA, his mix selections just aren't what they used to be. Although he is supposed to have a new mix online this week (25mins of it dubstep) so we'll see.

So what does everyone think about dubstep? Im not the biggest fan, but I do like some of it. For me it really come's down to how crazy the song is. I like circus bass. I want there to be lots of layers. I guess over produced.

here is a mix by diplo that I really like

I really hate dub step. In fact I loathe every time people try to label another off shoot of jungle/dnb "step" anything....Dub Step makes me want to put my head on a buzz saw.

What is it about dubstep that you don't like? Just curious. Dubstep to me is like if DNB and Hip-Hop had sex they would have birthed Dubstep.

What kind of DNB do you lean towards? Rollers, Circus bass, Tech? Just curious

BTW here is a mix I made of my own music let me know what ya think. Its all kinds of music

http://www.mixcrate.com/mix/8199/DJ-Del ... nd-Control

@wizeguy- I checked them, I didnt know about them (I don't get out much anymore) Thanks
@Mecha- Im gonna check that mix when I get home. Thanks p.s I have a shit load of tapes as well I need to convert. Old school R.A.W. and Danny the wild child + more I can't rember

Dubstep is just not very musical or rhythmic to me. It doesn't really appeal at all. I don't like the basslines, really hate pop music influences. I was big into hardcore/jungle/dnb all the way till around 1997. I love the old Reinforced dark stuff from 92-93, Suburban Base, Moving Shadow, Face,Deejay. FBD, Bukem stuff, Ragga, even got into the jump up (with old hip hop samples) that was big 95-96. Tech step was good too. In fact DnB after 1997 really didn't appeal to me too much. Maybe a brief period in 2000-2001 when oldskool came back as flavor of the year (think Total Science/Digital). Music died for me after 2003. Anything that is on the radio sucks, anyone trying to be edgy now sucks (whatever genre they're all the same anymore), basically all music now sucks.

Post Re: the darkside has me pretty bad- oldskool jungle heads?
Dubstep is basically taking ideas/sounds/samples originated in DNB, adding some fire alarms and other circus instruments, with a dash of pop bullshit and a slower "danceable" beat. So with that, you now have instant overnight dj sensations that are getting booked all over the place, it's disgusting. But hey, im glad dnb is still its own scene and untouched by celebs and the likes of Tiesto fans.

And this is my 1200th post, so I thought I should mention they actually stopped production of the classic Technics 1200s, thanks bright new faces of the "music industry".
