Nice Thee Michelle Gun Elephant post, I love those guys. I didn't realize their guitar player just passed away a few weeks ago. I've been digging the Stance Punks a lot lately as well.

I had no idea. He was only 42. Too young. This isn't him - I'm not sure what he did after TMGE. I thought he was in Rosso, but apparently not. Whatever, it's one of the bands that came out of the split and a great song: The Birthday ~ "Stupid": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oGJNNKtw6z4

Japanoise, as someone said earlier, is very interesting, but most of it doesn't (at least for me) bear repeated listens. Violent Onsen Geisha is an exception to this. "No samplers, keyboards or synthesizers used in the making of this recording", it usually says somewhere on his albums. Otis: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JuH2UDlcDHYNight Of Unclean Water: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sKHV7EyPksYSameni Kuwareta Musume: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CxayCDUB4EwHe also goes under the name The Hair Stylistics. And let's not forget Yoko Ono ~ A great artist, as anyone who's ever been to one of her exhibitions will attest to. Also, believe it or not, a classically-trained singer (' minyo' I think it's called). Re: The Japan Music Thread
I love Yoko, especially the album "Fly." So many good songs on that album, such a killer band. The opening vocal on "Don't Worry Kyoko (Mommy's Only Looking for Her Hand in the Snow") still gives me chills.
Possibly the most unfairly maligned and misunderstood figure in popular music, ever.

Actually, I hate karaoke. Inevitably sometimes get dragged along though, and when I do I usually request someone sing this: Another anime song ... the theme to "Attack No.1" ~ http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x1kuqd ... -no1_music(Can't find the original on YouTube - prob cuz of the appalling new version that's out. This one, by Go!Go!7188 , is passable though: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LId1HjBb_3o ) If I could sing, I might choose this myself: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PwkvhNNuBwo( Extra otaku points if you can tell what it is just from the image macro! )

I was at Guitar Wolfs last show in GA with Bass Wolf ( Hideaki Sekiguchi) before he died ...before the show he was walking around asking if anyone had any weed. Lately F*ck on the Beach has been ruling my playlist.

Oh hai! It's THIS thread again! :3 I'm not really hardcore anything myself (although my local record store does file Boris under 'Hardcore Japanese Punk' ) so I was kind of hoping sumone else would post more like the above. I DO like these guys. Called 'Digital Metal' here, I heard some Ausfailian call them a "shitty grindcore band". (There is apparently MORE THAN ONE band called Wrench.) Whatever, the gitarist reminds me personally of none other than Ed Ozric. Their best tracks are on albums, but these will have to do: WRENCH ~ Sky, Liquid, Men : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ptd5p4lIn20Take Away : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ANC8rEECs3k

 Re: The Japan Music Thread
i really have no idea how it took me this long to stumble into this part of the boards and see this thread. i should have guessed... I can't believe it took a page and a half before anyone mentioned boris. i've been lucky enough to see them a handful of times and its a spectacle. michio completely tears the guitar a new asshole and between that and the drummer shrieking like a girl and ferociously banging a gong, its quite the sideshow. a bunch of you guys have mentioned some other great stuff, but i'll add mine to the list... I really dig Kiiiiiii. they're strange and cute. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yPP8waT5 ... re=relatedCornelius Merzbow boredoms Ghost sexy synthesizer melt banana did anyone mention DMBQ? check this one out.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eEgjIYso ... re=relatedthere are a ton others that i'm a fan of. i can't remember at the moment. a couple of my friends are coming out with a documentary on the tokyo underground music scene and they've definitely expanded my horizons in that regard.

 Re: The Japan Music Thread
While Boris put on a great show I wouldn't use "spectacle" or "sideshow" as descriptors. I felt it was a pretty straight-forward wail-fest. While Wata absolutely shreds, she does it in a very detached, serene manner. Atsuo is the only one who really goes nuts. Even though the music is quite different the vibe of the show reminded me of seeing JSBX years ago (I dunno if they still rock like they use to).

 Re: The Japan Music Thread
yeah i guess you're somewhat right. i mean, atsuo DID stage dive off his kick drum at the end of the show.. other than that, I think i'd agree with you.
although, i will say its quite a spectacle just to watch michio shred..

 Re: The Japan Music Thread
Hahaha. Perfume rock my world as well.
For the person who was looking for Japanese downtempo/ambient. You can check out the labels Green, Shin-ra-nui, Sonic Plate, Plop and Triple-6. Or just pick up an issue of Fader or After Hours (the Japanese one, probably the best music magazine out there) and check the ads.
My favorite would be Supercar, Machine Gun TV, Ôtal, Chikopido, Peatmos, Red Go-Cart, Rocky Mountain Broncos Power, Halcali, Chara, Our Hour, Add, Envy, Snail Ramp, Asa-Chang and Junray, Sugar Plant, Luminous Orange, Citrus... I used to work in the indie music world in Japan. Good times.
