now I know everyone is gonna say "it IS Ikea after all", but we just bought another detolf and they made a lot of small, subtle changes and overall I think they're worse quality now.

the magnets that hold the door shut are different and shittier and overall it just seems more rickety. the glass is a lot shakier and doesn't feel as sturdy. and one of the shelves lays crooked.

maybe it's just a lemon we got, but who knows.

Yeah, I saw one at Ikea a few weeks ago...it looks pretty nice! It seems like solid material, plus it has adjustable shelves and a lockable door. It's also a few inches bigger than the detolf.

There's no hole in the top to run lights, but you can always drill your own.

I loath my detolfs.

Considering they've dropped 33% in price in the last year, something has got to give. I just got another in the hauntingly beautiful 'beech' color and the color doesn't match the old ones.

oh I'm 100% positive that this is the cause. however, it doesn't make me want to burn down Ikea any less.

That new white one would be better if it came in black. The detolf i have is lame too. When you open the door it shakes the whole thing, what a piece.

A good solution i found is to get the cheap glass shelves they have and you can just install them on the wall and it's real sturdy, gives you lots of horizontal space.

Glass shelves sound nice though you gotta dust. Gives you an excuse to rearrange stuff.

Flynn had some bookshelves with open shelving that looked interesting, but with the same problem as the detolfs. Everything gets segmented into cubes.

I think Ikea make those too? Or at least something similar. I sort of like the Billy bookcase system...I might get those for my new place. You can get some interesting finishes and doors.

The only glass case I have is an older Ikea cabinet that has very stable chrome legs w/ cross bracing and the glass display portion sits about 30" above the floor (up out of the main dust zone). I picked it up on Craig's list for $35! Wish Ikea still made them - I would pick up a couple more. Detolfs scare me. Not much lateral support and I just know I'd put my foot through it.

those new display cases seem nice. the detolf's are always 1" 2 small...so a 19 x 19 size rules.

I might have to order one and check it out.

I've been thinking of making a double or triple wide base and top for my detolfs and then reassembling them as one monster wide one.
