totally random question that plagues me: does anyone know the history behind that spoon?? why is it shaped that way? i know in this situation it helps the ants drink the soup, but why do humans benifit from its shape?

When I told him I wasn't interested, he hopped back into his truck and left. I don't think he went to any of my neighbor's doors...

I don't know much about the history, but that type of soup spoon is Chinese in origin. I would assume it has that flat wide shape to accommodate both broth and vegetables (and also noodles) typical in Chinese soups and stews. The style dates at least to the early 19th century per a quickie Web search. It seems logical to assume in lieu of more robust research that the style goes back many centuries earlier than that, given Chinese ingenuity as regards culinary tools. As you probably know, that style of spoon is also used for serving "small dish" items in some contemporary high-end restaurants.

According to Wikipedia's entry on soup spoons, "A good soup spoon is large enough to deform the mouth when it is pushed in like a shovel." LOL

I'd be curious to know more about the origin of the groove up the handle. Some antique Chinese spoons I've seen don't have that. Perhaps it's an anti-spillage feature?

In Swahili, one addresses these instruments respectfully as "Bwana spoons."

allz i know is... i grew up using that spoon, and when i go to a restaurant with their dinky ass metal spoons, i get frustrated

I have an ant problem as well in my apartment. Seems to have kicked up over the summer months.

Once I found them chasing food residue in the garbage disposal. That problem was quickly resolved, however...

cool, that did help- a little, now i understand the bwana spoon toy name, or bwana fish whale whatever it is... thats interesting that older versions didnt have the groove up the handle, i didnt know it was chinese in origin but that makes sence, aqnd that wikapidia quote is hilarious.


on a note with ants, i hear that cinnomin (however you spell that crazy word) when sprinkled will keep ants away, as it burns their feet... i thought it was interesting but i havent tried it. id yell DANCE! DANCE! when they walked over it tho if i were to try.
