For those wondering about the mag, HH is probably the best of the big Japanese toy mags in terms of kaiju coverage. The others - Figure King, Hobby Japan, and Quanto, tend to cast a wider net and have scant pachi kaiju news.

Having said that, you're not going to get a whole lot out of buying the mag if all you want is a preview of things to come. That info tends to circulate all over the Net either before it appears in HH or shortly after, thanks to the ever-vigilant scanning crews.

Seems to me that HH casts the widest net, giving equal coverage to all toy sub-genres, whereas mags like Hobby Japan tend to mainly focus on Gundam Models and junk.

HH also has great free goodies sometimes, like the glow Bullmark Legends Not-So-Giant Godzilla, the clear Baltan Kubrick, and that infamous Flatwoods Monster finger puppet.

Well, I scan them all for free every month at a local store. Just relaying my impressions.

Anyway, I don't think any of them are worth buying unless your Japanese is excellent or you're picking them up for the store ads in the back, which I always do before taking a trip to Japan.

I disagree. The pictures are great, and it covers so many different things (including customs). One can always use it to help practice their Japanese, too (if that's an interest). And, I guess I just like to support a publisher willing to put out such a cool magazine, by buying it (and like Rog said, the freebies can be damn cool). But hey, that's just me...

I think HH is an incredible lesson in magazine design. They pack in so much madness with awesome layouts. I don't read a lick of Japanese, but I spend hours carefully bugging out on every issue.

I've bought 10-20 issues of the various mags over the years. Wound up giving away or recycling every one, after I've cut out the ads in the back, which have been extremely useful.

Not saying HH is a bad mag, of course, just of limited interest to most collectors. Each issue has maybe 2-3 pages with pics of upcoming kaiju releases. I've never seen an article devoted to a pachi kaiju company like Real Head or Blobpus. If I did, I certainly would try to read it - now that's practice I could get into! Plenty of stuff on "original" kaiju, though. If you can read the articles, great. But nearly everything else is page after page of upcoming Star Wars, Transformer, etc, etc releases.

Let's face it - Kai-Zine is the only magazine that really cares about pachi kaiju - and it's free!

If by "most collectors", you mean people on this board, possibly, but I don't think that gives them enough credit that they've got varied toy interests. It covers lots of other Japanese toy lines/companies. SOC, Microman, Medicom, Bandai, Votoms, Gundam, Kamen Rider, Godzilla, M1go etc.....in fact, over the last few years, SW/TF have been appearing far less. I think "most collectors" are into all the other stuff, not urban vin...whoops..."pachi kaiju".

I dunno, last month's issue was yet another major TF issue,hence the free clear figure release. I'd wager page for page TF receives more press in TF and FK than any other line.

Yeah, although I didn't keep any for myself, I picked up extra copies of HH with "Urine Bumblebee" for my Transfan friends, who really enjoyed it.

The TF coverage has more to do probably with the success of the movie, and that it was released in Japan not too long ago. I would wager that looking over the last year, Bandai's Armour Trans line (mostly Kamen Riders), Sentai, SOC, and SIC get the lionshare of coverage. But if ya ain't into those, I guess it still doesn't matter.

Sure if folks are into mass market Japanese or American lines, then definitely there's a ton of stuff in HH, FK, etc to interest them. Just figured folks who haven't bought these mags before should know that a single free issue of Kai-Zine has more info on pachi kaiju than a large stack of Hyper Hobby's, Figure King's etc.

i like hyper hobby for the pix, and to help with my japanese, i bought some issues when i was in japan.
that is why i am seeking it out!

Kai-Zine is a free mag devoted to pachi-kaiju. Interviews and articles on companies like Charactics, Sun Guts, and, in the next issue (which may already be out) Real Head. Great photos, checklists, interviews, etc.
