going to see it tonight which means I'll miss out on the chance of getting that Lash custom obake from the show (if i didn't sell last night)
but Joy Division are my fave band and Curtis is one of the greatest lyricists of all time.
I am really looking forward to this heard nothing but great things on it

have only been hearing good things about it so far....

Anton Corbijn, the director, started his career as a photographer.
He made a name for himself photographing Post-Punk bands as Joy Division and Public Image Ltd.

ahh, didn't know that. So he was there first hand. I guess it makes this biopic even more authentic.

yeah he took the famous photo of the band that had Ian with his back to the camera that appeared on the front of the NME, he also made the Atmosphere video after Ian died.
the film is everything i wanted it to be, it is very moving, the cinematography is second to none, all the actors do an outstanding job, and it doesn't pull any punches with it's portrait of Curtis.
Often there are huge portions of the film that feature no music and little dialogue, and reminded me of those gritty bbc 1 kitchen sink dramas from the late 70's, the decision to film in B&W was the right thing to do, all the gig footage is perfect and much of it matches up to bootleg dvd's i own of the first london gig and early shows with the buzzcocks.
Sorry if I seem to be gushing on this but it was absolutley perfect in every way.

I can't urge you all to see this enough, even if you are not a Joy Division fan, as the very human story will be enough to pull you in. tragic yet triumphant.

Mark Kermode (BBC reviewer) gave it a very good review, which says a lot as he's of the Joy Division generation, qualified to understand the history of the band and its legacy and ephemera.

There is one terribly embarrassing thing about promos related to this film and the concurrently released documentary "Joy Division," and that is ... New Order. If you're a hardcore New Order fan, don't read the rant below.

Suddenly, black and white promo photos of the band (which evidently now consists of the three members who were in JD and nobody else) are turning up, photos that have them all wearing long coats, staring off sadly in different directions in locations in London where JD was also photographed. In other words, "that's us! remember? Buy our stuff!" Er, not that they've ever stopped working the JD legacy for their own, but realistically, they veered off into very different territory a very long time ago. None of this would bother me much as I haven't cared for anything New Order has done since about 1988, but what really made me laugh (and sad) are their new covers of "Transmission" and "Love Will Tear Us Apart." Has anyone here heard them? They're trying so hard to sound like themselves as much younger men, and the energy just isn't there. Moreover, Barney's voice is gone (not that it was ever strong) and can't compare to Ian's booming authoritative singing. They should have just re-released the classic albums instead.

Um, anyway, can't wait to see the movie.

Did you guys check out the soundtrack for the movie? I'm pretty excited about the movie, and that soundtrack looks like it's gonna be pretty good too and it's pretty cool that Kraftwerk is on the soundtrack. It seems pretty odd with the style of music, but I'm not complaining. I like Kraftwerk, and Autobahn seems to fit the mood. 24hr Party People made it over to San Francisco, so I'm hoping this will.

Haven't heard the soundtrack yet but if I understand correctly it's the actors playing JD who play on the soundtrack, not JD ... is that right?

Kermode made a good argument for why this is better than lip synching. I tend to agree. It worked pretty well for "The Buddy Holly Story" and "Walk the Line."

yeah the guy that palyed curtis used to be in a post punk/punk funk band 10,000 things and he begged the director to let them play the songs themselves, it's pretty stunning, the soundtarck is amazing except that for some reason they let the Killers cover Shadowplay (which is horrible , I can't think of a band less able to carry that tune) but you know as mistakes go one song over the last 4 minutes of the credits aint to bad !

I remember hearing the NewOrder versions somewhere...maybe on youtube. There really is no way Barney can come close to Ian's voice. I like NewOrder but it's more because I accept the fact that they are not Joy Division and have tried to make a sound on their own, but I have to say, I can listen to Closer and Unknown Pleasures without skipping a song more times than I could a NewOrder album. When you break it down even further, I don't really care much for the side projects that everyone's done...except for Peter Hook. I guess I just like his bass sound.

Yeah, GREAT bassist, and the drummer was always a fantastic workhorse. One big mystery for me, though ... Sumner's guitar work in Joy Division was pretty innovative at times. In New Order, especially after the first album, you don't hear that. Maybe it was all about the surrender to the beat and the pop stylings.

Heh, when I was in a band I taught myself to play basic intuitive bass by playing along with early New Order records. As I recall, ALL of the notes were on the frets! Really easy play-alongs.

it plays about three minutes into the end credits, funny as when the final shot faded (which is an absolutley perfect shot!) not one person moved or got up....not until the killers cover came on ! yeah it sucks really bad but IT ISN"T int he fil so all good


I think after they made Blue Monday, guitars didnt interest them at all, i met them when brotherhood came out and they were really moody bastards ! haha
they should stop making records tho now as there best days are behind them, although their instrumental pieces on this film are really nice. God I'm such a fanboy !

Maybe they meant to get the Stranglers to do the cover and accidentally signed a contract with the Killers; thats the only thing that could justify this decision.

I guess if its not in the actual film but rather the credits then its not too painful since you can leave without missing the actual movie.

Limited US release on Oct 10th. Hope it makes it to a city near you...or better yet, the city you live in.
