it has everything you could ever want in a movie

sure it's pretty much an Escape From New York/Road Warrior rip off, but hats off to Neil Marshall for getting a movie like that made in 2008! he's made 3 fantastic films so far and I hope he's successful enough to continue putting out quality genre films. in fact, he's actually kinda like the new John Carpenter, but when JC was good.

I was pretty interested, post-apocalypse flicks can either rule or totally suck. I'll need to check this out now.

I feel the same way about post-apocalyptic movies, I think most suck, but this one was firmly in the "rules" category. So fucking awesome!

I would compare this to a "EPIC MOVIE"/"Scary Movie" tribute, but for people into serious trash cinema and spatter punk.
Perhaps it is a film best seen by people who HATE Post Apocalypctic Genre films.
It was like picking 3 films cut together.

I live on the post apocalyptic genre and I just can't get enough of it. I Loved 28 days later, Mad max, Escape from NY, the postman, waterworld, Jericho, No Escape Heck, even the National Geographic Post Apocalyptic special...
I was expecting seriously cool stuff. This was not very "deep"
less so than After the fall of New York or Metalstorm.
BUT the trailer is misleading. This is as much ONE theme as WESTWORLD was about a western town.

I went to it thinking it was a Mad Max style film and was greeted by a naked gun fight in a bathtub. DOOMSDAY is a constantly changing mismash reinterpretation of BAD genre films by a Horror director obviously in love with Video Nasties.


I certainly loved the commercial, but THAT was the film I wanted to see.
Not just seeing said people chopped up over and over again.
Eaten, dismembered, ripped apart, etc.

Any character with a tattoo was immediately obliterated on sight with a machine gun, like a scene out of ALIENS.
The punk scene barely lasted 15 minutes before they flipped to yet another genre and it was "a knight's tale" mixed with the Sadomasochism Inquisition Horror Genre.
You may enjoy it if you have a seriously sick sense of humor.



I do have to say I laughed my arse off at the lead villian and his "Male pattern Baldness Mohawk" I kept laughing every time I saw him.
Man, where are Lord Humungus and Wez when I need them...
I now OFFICIALLY recant my disdain for MM beyond Thunderdome as being a sappy kids film. Heck, this film has made me rethink my opinion of Escape from LA.

After reading the Mad Max forums, It would seem my opinion is pretty tame compared to the Mad Maxophiles.
I would say anyone who knows Max's last name would probably not be the right audience.
I am certain that if it is properly marketed, it will find an audience of people who just adore it.
People who do not want something serious.

I spent the last week defending this film to everyone I know and wanted so much to like it, but I felt seriously betrayed by the marketing of the film.
(I am currently laid off and to shell out for two tickets to this film cut deep man.)

The tone almost reminded me of Gareth Marengi's Dark Place,
which is also gory, goofy and a tribute to the Video Nasties. Those types of film were funny to me back in the 80's when I was 12, but now I don't have the patience for it. It doesn't help that I have literally seen every film that Doomsday borrowed from, so it was watching the TURKISH STARWARS after seeing the real thing. It was just not quite the same.
When the stunts did arrive, they were not the bombastic work of a Crazed Aussie film maker, but very restraned and short. It does have it's moments, but they are only driving me back to the source material.

I did like the Celtic symbol that was redone as a biohazard symbol.
I loved the tattoo body art. I did like "Viper" for all 5 minutes she was on screen.
I will try and find horror fans that I think will like it and recommend it to them.

so what you're saying is you don't like, say, the work of Enzo Castellari or Sergio Martino for example? see, I have no problem with stupid trashy movies, in fact, I more than often prefer them. I don't really understand the notion of why those "bad" films would be funny to you when you were younger, but not anymore.

then again, I really only watch bad movies anymore. I sometimes get annoyed when my friends want to watch a really well done, artistic film.

I didn't necessarily think that Doomsday was silly. I thought it was played perfectly straight and came off as such. it certainly didn't remind me of Darkplace! (which is totally awesome, by the way). and I also like Turkish Star Wars. and Message From Space. and Star Crash. and just about any other Star Wars rip off. and any Mad Max/EFNY rip off too.

The thing that seriously confused me with Doomsday is that it was marketed as big budget fare. It does not LOOK outwardly look like trash cinema, but on the INSIDE it beats with the heart of those films. I never said it LOOKED like Darkplace or Turkish starwars, but those fans would love it.
If you enjoy that sort of thing, you will love this movie.

I like the less gore intensive fare. I love Star Crash.
You need to see Accion Mutante. That is really up your alley.

oh I like Accion Mutante. I like almost anything Alex De La Iglesia touches, as a matter of fact.

and I agree, I'm so over the whole horror zombedy thing myself. Undead was pretty much a stinker. but I think there is a big difference between movies intentionally made to be silly and movies that were made with the best intentions and just couldn't pull it off, something like Nightmare City for example. that's the kind of trash I like - movies where the actors and director are honestly trying to make the best of some atrocious script and every last lame dollar they had was sunk into it and it's played totally straight, but it's just bad and funny and fun.

I think the whole market-a-big-budget-movie-that-is-really-explotiation-trash is big in Hollywood right now (Grindhouse (even though if flopped), Rob Zombie films, etc.)

and I still just don't get where you're seeing the silliness in Doomsday. I think it was a far cry from something as overtly goofy as Darkplace or TSW.

I rarely go into the theater with expectations anymore (although I must admit I had some for Doomsday after seeing Neil Marshall at Comic Con last year). or if I do I usually have intentionally bad expectations. that way, I'm almost never disappointed. if the movie sucks, I expected it to. if it's great, then I'm pleasantly surprised.

Good philosophy to have these days and well said. Based on what you all have said, I want to see this movie even more than I already did and I will go into it expecting it to suck and hoping for the pleasant surprise.

it's kinda sad that in todays movie making/Hollywood climate that I expect things to suck, but I mean, I'm often proven right. it's such a business anymore, and rather do what would actually work in a movie, they just try to make everything over the top with all kinds of CGI and nonsense.

there are lots of things I see trailers for, want to see, but I just think "at least I'll be minimally entertained for 90 minutes." if I come out of it with more than that, fantastic! the filmmaker is obviously a genius!
