 dr. who fans?
this is a show i have wanted to check out for quite sometime. i am coming at it from a completely Fresh Meat standpoint. the only dr. who i ever saw was as a child in very brief sittings on PBS
i am overwhelmed by all the DVDs on netflix... where do i start? they do not seem to be released in seasons
also, is the new show that started in 2005 any good?

 Re: dr. who fans?
Skylar and I are watching this starting with the entire series. Something to know getting into it, many episodes are missing. BBC did not have an archive policy, and some just got junked! As in, the story arcs are either partially or completely gone. There are many fan recreations available, and we have been watching those (some audio survived, so people match still photos of cast to audio-its not great, but it keeps the story together). Torrents are available for everything so far. Wikipedia is extremely helpful, and includes all serials including missing ones. I'd start at the beginning & work your way to modern ones. that's what we're doing. 20 minute episodes mean you can devour them quick. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doctor_who_serialsits overwhelming, but definitely possible to watch them all, but you may need to get a few torrents as DVDs sets are all incomplete.

As a kid, I saw it on PBS here in the US, as well.....the Robot from the 1st Baker ep freaked me out. So did the big bugs from Ark in Space. And I can't forget Davros....

 Re: dr. who fans?
I thought Eccleston made a good Doctor. Tennant is good, but I thought the last season suffered due to uneven writing and trying to produce "funny" scripts for Catherine Tate. Still, for the most part, a pretty good series. The thing that drives me crazy though, is that he has access to weapons from every world and time period, but all he carries is that stupid screwdriver. I know that's part of the series "charm", but sometimes the Doctor is too talky-preachy.

 Re: dr. who fans?
Here, I'll sum up the series for you-
Assistant: "oh no, Doctor, what should we do?!" Doctor: "I know! Let's run up and down the halls a few times!"
aaaaand scene
Tom Baker's my favorite of the older Drs- sassy is a great word to describe him. He's sort of mocks the show, but in a way that puts a funny edge to his episodes. I just bought the new one with Tennant although he kinda bugs me. Always seems to be yelling or spazzy. And as mentioned before, soooo preachy

Of the new Who's last season won hands down, nearly every episode was stellar. The last one with Tate woeful, and the season finale

 Re: dr. who fans?
I remember a Tom Baker episode with a space station where these people in cryosleep tubes were being used as hosts for alien insects. I think the Cybermen were involved, too.
I also remember the Zygons controlling the Loch Ness Monster.

 Re: dr. who fans?
Tom Baker met up with the big bugs (Wirrven or something) and the Cybermen is different eps on space stations. That reminds me..."The Sontaren Experiment" that followed "Ark in Space" also freaked me out as a kid.
I agree with the most recent finale. Really? All companions in a kumbaya moment? Barf. I liked how they made the Sontarens little badass runts earlier in the season, though.
Bring back the Zygons!!

Set in Victorian England, with a Jack the ripper / Sherlock Holmes feel. Tom Baker is the shit. My all time favourite Doctor. Dr who used to air @ 6.00 on ABC Australia every week night in the 80’s. Other great episodes are ‘Pyramids of Mars’ & ‘Horror Of Fang Rock’. You cant go wrong with most of the late 70’s – late 80’s episodes. That reminds me ....Ahh, Leela

 Re: dr. who fans?
Ah, after reading the Wikipedia entries I see that the space bug episodes and the ones with the Cybermen I remember took place on the same space station. Get your money's worth out of those sets, lads!

 Re: dr. who fans?
yeah i notice the slip ups too. It seems like Old tv was just like that. We were recently also watching the old Dark Shadows and it was full of forgotten lines, boom mics, and blurry shots. haha.
CRANK EM OUT! and keep watching. you'll get no spoilers from me!
