You guys (more than anyone I know) have a LOT of stuff. Have any of you ever moved across country (or any long distance)? If so, how did you do it?

Did you get rid of stuff before you went? Did you move it yourself or use a moving company? Was it really expensive?

How much money did you save up before you felt ok about going?

Just gathering some information. Answer what you can.

Honestly when I moved to the west coast I looked into it. It was SO expensive to move across the country. The most economical option for me was to ship everything I could. I also stored things with the idea that I could come back and ship them slowly through the year when I came to visit. Or have friends do it.

I also sold all my furniture, TVs, Bed, etc etc. It just made more sense to buy new than to go through with the price of moving it. It also felt great to purge everything. I gave SO many toys to friends. It was like christmas.

I was hoping you would answer! So shipping was less than moving? wow! What about the rest? What about records & books & heavy stuff?

I just got around to shipping records. 7"s can fit in a flat rate box. 12"s is what im about to get around to. Books send media and wait but track eveything.

Basically, I took what I could with me(I drove). Essentials and a few boxes of random stuff(Ie favorite records,toys what not) so I felt like I had some belongings and didn't feel homeless.

I also made sure I took careful track of what was in each box I stored and that it was also ready to be shipped. I numbered boxes blah blah blah. ALSO I have friends check boxes($20) when they fly out to see me.

For the record a small uhaul trailer one way across the country was 2000+. I checked into pods as well. It was worse. None of my shit was worth that so like I said. I sold it, boxed/stored it, shipped it or took it with me.

I moved from Chicago to Atlanta a few years ago but it was easiest/cheapest for us to rent a truck BUT we had family helping for free. My wife's stepfather flew in and drove the truck while we, with our station wagon loaded to the gills, drove that and ourselves.

Slamming crap into the truck was like playing Tetris with huge things like beds, tables, sub-freezers. All my toys traveled in my wagon with me.

I would try to take as many collectibles in your vehicle as possible, like BloodDrinker did, or ship them. I had stuff crushed in just a relatively short move; fortunately it wasn't the A-list stuff. And we had to hire a junk company to haul away all the items we had gathered in ten years in one house- it's amazing how long it actually takes to empty a dwelling.

I just checked and it cost $600 for both a 14 foot box truck and a car trailer for an entire week. U-haul is always high, I went with Penske and the truck was great. Gas is cheap right now so a gas truck is the way to go.

I have to agree and say get rid of all your unneeded furniture. I brought a bed, couch, table and a couple of bookcases. Tons of space for books, toys, records, and art.

I went the more unorthodox way, and sold/gave away pretty much everything fungible. Some would argue that to be EVERYTHING everything, but I am mostly referring to furniture. It always costs the most to move, and takes up the most space. One of the biggest obstacles (for me) was, being single, there was that financial hurdle--saving enough to pay for all of the moving expenses, and then securing a new place to live (i.e., security deposit, 1st month rent, utilities, etc.) Moving for me has always been as exciting, as it is a pain the ass!

When I moved I totally had to give some stuff away ---- it was kind of neat because I go to distinguish what I really like from what was perhaps more of a compulsion to buy ---- I gave many of my toys to charity etc. and gifts to friends --- I don't regret it because I kept all the extra special ones etc... plus its always nice to share

Sell (or give away) all the shit that has no sentimental value. You can use the money to by replacements when you get to your destination. (Especially big stuff like furniture. Cheaper to buy on Craig's list than to ship)
