Post Cool Shelving
Wish I could afford these illuminated Italian acrylic shelves for my Japanese vinyl.
I need to explore how to make something like this for myself.
(Look under products/ storage units/ 'matrix')

I think they look a bit naff/ cheap sticking out like that. I'd like them more if they were recessed into the wall with thicker acrylic shelves.

I like 'em but agree with mondo - why they didn't bevel the edges....or at least round them a bit is odd especially for the (probable) high cost of the unit.

Interesting concept!

LOL!!! Very nice, Jeff. It makes me think of most adverts for high-end furniture. Isn't it a stitch how there is, like, nothing on the shelves yet the price tags can sometimes get into the thousands of dollars?!!

They had to sell everything else to buy the shelves

I checked out TAPS plastics to see how much 1/2" thick acrylic 'planks' would be. A 2'X4' sheet 1/2" thick (2 shelves worth) is $154. If you go up to 3/4" thickness, it's $236.

So much for building one of these myself :|

To get the thick edges illuminated w/ a hidden light source (LED or fiber optic), acrylic is best. Plus, with glass, you would have visible mechanical fasteners joining the horizontal & vertical members. The weight of glass would make it difficult to 'float', as well.

But you are right, glass is alot cheaper. It just is not the right material for the design 'as is'. Thanks for the link for scheme 'B'.

I just recently designed some custom display units with thick glass edge lit with Leds. If you're recessing into a wall unit like that. No fasteners needed.
