I'm hoping that it will be good, but not very pumped after seeing the trailers/promos so far.

Re: Early reports in on Star Trek
I should say that I don't really give a crap about star trek. I'm going to go see it because its JJ Abrams, and I like big movies...but I don't have high hopes.
i laughed at the trailer. I don't think that was the intent.

Re: Early reports in on Star Trek
It looks "too big" if that makes sense. It reminds me how the new Star Wars movies had way too much stuff in them compared to the old ones. That's the feeling I get for the new Star Trek. I'm hoping that I'm wrong as I will be seeing it. JJ hasn't let me down yet.

Re: Early reports in on Star Trek
Abrams' own comments have put me off seeing this. He said he wasn't a fan of the original, but is a fan of "his" Trek. Plus he said he preferred Star Wars over Star Trek. I like both; but I don't think Trek should be more like SW. I hope I wrong; but this looks like another big franchise watered down for the casual movie goer; like Wolverine.

Re: Early reports in on Star Trek
I've never had any interest in Star Trek whatsoever (SW fan). But I must say, I'm definitely interested in having a look.

Re: Early reports in on Star Trek
They lost me with the skydiving? scene in the trailer that just looks like a scene from Power Rangers; where they are all in different color suits... That and it all reminds me too much of Speed Racer the movie. All flash, too much CGI, pushing all the effets past the limits to what looks normal and/or realistic.

Re: Early reports in on Star Trek
In this case, I'm soooo glad that the movie was NOT made by fans.
Star Trek fanbois kinda ruined Star Trek for me, and that was way back circa 1978! My first Star Trek convention was in 1975. I know, some of you were not yet born. I remember the convention in '76 at which clips from some movie in production called "The Star Wars" were shown. (Yes, with "The" in the title.)
I thought I hated Star Trek by this point but the excitement for the restart makes it all fresh again. So glad Abrams got the gig.
Did anyone catch the in-jokes in the most recent episode of "Fringe?" Very funny.
Speaking of those old cons I think the funniest thing I saw at one of them was Shatner trying to justify that weird talking/smoking version of "Rocket Man" that he did for some TV show. He said "well it's a song about drug use, so I used a cigarette as a prop." OK, gotcha Bill.

I remember the convention in '76 at which clips from some movie in production called "The Star Wars" were shown. (Yes, with "The" in the title.) Back about that time I remember attending my first comic convention here in NYC. Two things taught me the reality of fandom. 1) A week before someone sold me the Marvel comic version of Battlestar Galactica #1 for $3.25. In 1978 10 year old allowance terms, that meant a few weeks allowance saved up. Head over to that convention with friends and some guy is walking the aisles selling a stack of them for 25 cents a piece! The damned cover price was 35 cents! Screw you Comics Buyer’s Guide for justifying crazy prices for 100% crap. 2) Went to the bathroom at the Hotel Pennsylvania where the convention was at and there were at least 3 guys in horribly made homemade uniforms taking a whizz with their “Goody Bags” right next to them. Taught me a damned lesson. Oh, and spoilers be below. Read if you don’t mind that. Also, just came back from seeing the new Star Trek and while it looked good and I can’t say I hated it, it was pretty much forgettable when all was said and done. Everything felt like a video game cut scene. And a lot of the action played like video game missions and not much else. With a lot of the basic logic of “Hey, how can they do that?” really obvious and questionable. Not exactly “deus ex machina” level bad, but close enough to make you feel: “Wow, that’s an awful lot of happy coincidences” for a franchise that has a more of a brain to it than most. I mean, “red matter”? You drill a hole, drop in some goo and then *BOOM* black hole? Really? Take away Zachary Quinto as Spock and all of the past history of Star Trek and the film is fun, but feels weird... Wrath of Khan is still the best of the whole damned lot. But I will say this *SPOILER*: Even though she looked like some girl painted in green paint, that green chick was hot! But still they have aliens with huge CGI/Anime eyes but the green girl looks like she took a bath in Tempra paint? Also, not too sure about the previews elsewhere, but every damned one of them here in NYC was all “Earth/daughter/wife/mother” is in trouble. Except for maybe G.I. Joe which had the only woman who didn’t seem effing helpless in it. Yeah the Baroness.... You know it.

Re: Early reports in on Star Trek
I would have liked the movie to be produced by a fan, not a fan-boy. You can respect the original material and still produce something fresh.

Oh another spoiler bitching...
Oh and you guys remember that scene in Star Trek: First Contact where they play “Magic Carpet Ride”? Well, I love the Beastie Boys... But man, that was annoying.

Re: Early reports in on Star Trek
The trailer I saw at the theater looked to me like a polar opposite from the dreck I've seen on television lately. Maybe the TV ads are an attempt to appeal to a broader audience. Dunno. I'll just keep my expectations low and try to enjoy myself.

I wonder if, in this movie, Spock has already mastered the Vulcan neck pinchy thingy. Or if he uses his index finger to zip peoples heads open...

Re: Early reports in on Star Trek
Just saw it and thoroughly was entertained. Mind you..I'm not a fan of Star Trek but I liked the pacing and plot.
My friend who was a die hard trekker was split. He loved the movie but was annoyed that it altered the original timeline and events. For me? That snippet was covered in the movie. They don't delete or omit what happened with the original series but they do discuss alternate timelines/blackholes etc. It was good though.

Re: Early reports in on Star Trek
Yeah, you know what. I don’t hate the film. Whatever flaws or things that rubbed me wrong it had, it was actually great to see old characters done by new actors... And not necessarily because they were young, but holy crap how many geriatric actors can we see rehashing the same old schtick?
Wonder what the next film will be like.

I thought the movie was very entertaining which is what I had hoped it would be.
Certainly felt like a much better film than Wolverine but that wasn't hard I guess.

I'm not going to make some comment that will bend your opinion either way, but if you like Star Trek (and I do) or just like a good movie, go see it. I loved it. (I lied about the opinion part) It also helped that I saw it at a local movie house with a lot of fans and folks dressed up.

No but it definitely had me re-thinking the whole cosplay business
