Hey pals,
Herez a real boner you can help out with: there is a short-list of films I have tried to track down for some time, but they are either not DVD Region 1-friendly (i.e., play in US-made players), or never were put to DVD at all. Perhaps some of you out there might have these on a computer file or even VHS format (and have a way to SHARE 8) )? Lemme know.

Women In Cages (1971)
Inserts (1974)
Rolling Thunder (1977)
Blue Collar (1978)
Used Cars (1980)
Battle Royale (2000) ---if you haven't seen this Japanese picture, do it. It could be the most bad ass film of the decade.
Election [by Johnnie To] (2005)

I have battle royal on DVD, you should be able to find it on ebay. Although I did get mine years ago.

I didn't think there was a "worldwide" region code. Some of the copies say Region Code 0 Worldwide--the sellers are in Thailand and Philippines. Anyone have experience with this type of DVD?

Also check out hkflix.com. They have lots of region free NTSC stuff, although I haven't checked for most of what you listed. Battle Royale definitely is, as even Hot Topic stores even (or used to, at least) carry some oddball region 0 multi-disc special edition.

You should be able to find a hack to unlock your dvd player so it can play everything.

Check here for Battle Royale...

Yeah my copy is region 0, it will play on any system and worked fine even with my old DVD player.

Just got through watching battle royale 1 and 2. 1 is great, 2 is one of the worst films I've ever seen.

Crap, this reminds me that my brother-in-law has had my copy of BR for a few years now! Guess I can kiss that puppy good-bye.
And while BR2 was crappy, it could have been a pretty decent flick with some proper editing.

I can pretty much guarantee I will never watch BR2. For me, few films drove me wild like BR in the past ten years, and I won't spoil it with some schlocky sequel.

I can make you a region free copy of Battle Royale, if you'd like.

Also, I have to check around, but I might have a copy of Rolling Thunder. If not, I can definitely get you one.

You're talking about the revenge movie with Tommy Lee Jones, right?

Post Re: Movies
FYI, both Used Cars and Election are available on Amazon (UC is $7.99, Election is a more standard $17.99). Blue Collar was released by Anchor Bay about 10 years ago; it's out of print but probably available on Ebay or other used dvd sites. I'll second the recommendation for HKFlix in regard to Asian films, their prices and customer service are great. And if you haven't seen Johnnie To's Exiled, you really should.

@organic: thanks, brother. i never saw this film, i will definitely put it on my list!
@skylar: PM me, friend; and yes, the Rolling Thunder is the Bill DeVane/TLJ revenge classic.
@KJB: you are right, i've seen a region 1 copy of Blue Collar once in a blue moon on ebay. however, it is rare, there is usually only one copy, and it sells for major bucks. hey, that sounds like vinyl toys!

I think we should start a SB movie exchange club. Although I have no burner capabilities (wait maybe my G/F's suped up powerbook does?). Anyhow I'm all about obscure films. Though I lean towards 70's gritty crime drama (especially NYC), 40's & 50's film noir, horror, sci-fi, cult films (50's through 80's) and documentaries. Actually that covers a lot of bases...

Ah! Here we go, thought there was a topic already started!

Without giving anything away, has anyone seen The Grand Budapest Hotel yet? Yay or nay?

Hoping to catch it, when I get released from the office :)

^ It's amazing, obviously; not that I've seen it yet! All you need to know about a new Wes Anderson picture is where it's playing and how to get there.

Did Skullflix ever happen? :D

I've spent years praising his films to my brother who was having none of it. Don't like him, too weird, he says . . . until his wife makes him watch Moonrise Kingdom. Now he's totally turned around. He saw The Grand Budapest Hotel and loved it. I should get off my lazy arse and see it in the cinema.

Post Re: Movies
Was not impressed at all with Grand Budapest Hotel. Anderson has steadily slipped since Life Aquatic IMO. Darjeeling was ok, Moonrise was ok but ended ehhhh. The only really good thing about Grand Budapest was Willem Dafoe's character. I don't know, I think Wes Anderson has ceased to really try and is coasting on doing the same things in his films. You could argue it's his signature, but that signature is getting stale.
