Post Let Me In
I know Let the right One In is a favorite around here. While watching TV tonight I saw an ad for the new American remake, Let Me In. Here's the trailer.

Obviously they would do this, but it is unnecessary and disappointing to see it happen.

I am going to wait to hear if it is true to the orig material. The Swedish film tread lightly on some of the material (details omitted so as not to spoil it for people who have been living in caves) and I bet the US version will avoid it altogether.

Hollywood can't come up with any original ideas. Everything they promote is based on making money. They steal foreign movies they think will sell because of their cult status. Of course they will have to dumb it down and take out the bits your average American will feel uncomfortable with.

from everything i've read about it it's uncannily true to the source - even shot for shot, if you examine the trailer - for most of the movie. there will be some injections of american horror and no doubt toning down of the sexuality, which makes it all the more purposeless. sadly all that still gives it a leg up on 90% of the horror films since the swedish one came out.

Meh, so. Some small portion of that audience will go check out the original, give it some cash and maybe even get into it. Hollywood is what it is. It's the nature of it, but it doesn't mean there might not be something good from it all.

For the most part yes but I thought Inception was pretty original. Yes there were certain elements from Manga and other movies but Nolan could have easily tried to make a cash cow with releasing it in 3d and making action figures but he didn't. I was pretty entertained.

There was an element of sexuality in the original movie?

Directed by guy who did Cloverfield and music by Michael Giacchino, so maybe there's hope..

I loved the Swedish film, but to my Swede friends they thought the acting was extremely bad... he said you have to speak the language to understand why.

Got any examples of scenes that it was in that I may have missed?

It was a love story, did you miss that?
And you know, Eli...
We're starting to get into spoiler territory here.

Supposedly they have "reinterpreted" the book. What ever that means. Lindqvist did write this one as well, but it doesn't look like it has much going for it to be honest. People who love the original are unlikely to enjoy this, so in many ways I suppose it will be another Ringu/Ring situation.

edit: and yeah ^ it was without any doubt a love story.

I'd describe both eli's caretarker and oskar's reactions to her as intimate/loving but also a little sexual in nature. the scene when eli comes in the window and he asks her to go steady is one example. where oskar looks in on her changing is another. whether she's a 12 year old girl or a vampire is inconsequential (initially at least) from oskar's perspective - he's still a 12 year old boy. as for hakan, he definitely doesn't see himself as a paternal figure to her. one of the best things about the film is that it's very subtle; emotions aren't really glamorized or needlessly transparent. i'd just anticipate all of these details being altered because of how simplified american horror tends to be.

this topic has reminded me how much i appreciate the film.
the remake screened at toronto film festival this week and this short write up makes it look like the suspicions in this thread are valid.
