David did you see "Let Me In"?
I prefer LTROI, but thought Let Me In was decent for a US remake.

I may give it another go someday. I watched it in Vegas on my laptop while suffering a nasty, nasty cold. Not the best of circumstances.

Mark - I'm honestly torn whether I liked the jumping around, or didn't like it. I found it pretty confusing at first, but once I realized the easy way to tell apart the two timelines was the length of the actor's hair, it got a lot easier to cope with.
And I agree, that IS the horror of it... You bring a child into the world and they are a sociopath, but no one else sees it or acknowledges it. Hell, just look at how the mom was treated, like she was somehow responsible for her son's actions. The husband is completely ignorant and doesn't see it... Just a nightmare all around.

David - Good to know someone else saw The Host! Those other movies you mentioned, are they Korean horror-ish as well? If so, I'll definitely have to check them out... Even Snowpiercer, because now I'm curious as to why there's such a polarized opinion of it.

Madds - Memories of Murder is more of a uniquely told procedural, but there is a serial killer involved, if that helps! Mother is a very different sort of procedural than MoM, also not horror, but again murder is at the heart of it. I mentioned them both as they were made by the same fellow responsible for The Host. His Barking Dogs Never Bite is quite recommendable, too, with plenty of jet black comedy to carry you through.

If you want to dip into crazy and disturbing Korean cinema, you can't take a better 101 course than...All 3 are streaming on Netflix.

Mark - You might still hate Snowpiercer on second viewing, but without a doubt you picked the worst possible way to try to enjoy it, ha! Give it the dark room, big screen, surround sound treatment next year and meet me back here to complain.

Deb - The remake that betters the original isn't actually a hen's tooth, it's happened quite a bit over the past century, but nothing about the promo campaign for LMI made me think I was in for much of a contest. I actually did go as far as starting the movie, but dropped out not long after. Best I can say in my ignorance is that I'm sure there are many far worse retellings from the modern U.S. machine that I've also skipped.

To be clear, the jumping around didn't really confuse me, it just bugged me. I'm trying to think of another movie that was edited this way that also bugged me, but it's too late right now for my noggin. I don't mind non-linear story telling, however, the jump-cuts here seemed too forced. Anyway, enough about that.

Speaking of remakes, why the fuck is there a Hollywood remake of Oldboy :Absolutely refused to see it on principle.

Nerdist hyperbole is best ignored, but I guess now I'll have to go and see whatever it was that they had to say about it.

Park's Thirst was a pretty effed horror-like film. Muddled but enjoyable. Anyone seen his I'm a Cyborg, But That's OK, by the way? Holy ships!

Hollywood's Oldboy, never had the pleasure, most certainly must have been an elaborate tax evasion scheme involving no less than 47 seasoned insiders, with some kind of hidden clause that forced Spike Lee to sleepwalk his way into paid rent for the year.

That is one I couldn't get at all either. LTROI, I can kind of see, because it became a quite popular indie film, and fit in right at the time when America was getting all hip with remakes of Scandinavian stuff. Not that I think it is warranted, but anyways.

But Old Boy, on the other hand, makes so little sense even in the remake world. Like taking a Miike movie and trying to fit it into a 'US' mold, there is just... no way. And it didn't help that everything I heard about the development of the film turned me off. I choose to go on ignoring it, as some random title that I might see on a movie shelf, but has no connection to the original trilogy.

David..... I remain to be convinced.

Just to respond to this,
I wholeheartedly agree, and do not recommend for anyone to watch 'proper' movies in this way, but unfortunately it (viewing film in a manner it can be appreciated) is a luxury that sometimes is just not available to everyone. I am torn to say that someone should not watch really good cinema, because, yes, you are almost tainting the experience from the get go, while on the other hand, there are so many good movies out there that really ought to be seen and enjoyed by more people.

Okay, a phone is just ridiculous. Not that I haven't seen it done, but wow. If you have a smartphone with that kind of capability then you more than likely also can afford a television or a laptop. Not to mention there is just no reason.

I will most certainly add that, Really, no media should ever be consumed in public.

Well, I might argue bars with you to some extent, depending on the context and venue; but I think it is clearly inferable that I was suggesting media on devices, such as labtops, tablets, phones, watches, flip pads, Larry's backside, etc.

People who watch movies on their phone in public boggle me. How can you even enjoy the movie with people interrupting, background noise, teeny tiny screen...? Okay, maybe you've seen the movie many times and don't need to hear everything. Then why are you watching it? Where's the enjoyment? I just don't get it!

So many reasons indeed why it makes little sense; but then, there is a lot about the 'modern' world that baffles me, astounds, or downright irritates the heck out of me.

In terms of Captain American on a Caste Train, it wasn't that I necessarily found the movie offensive or boring, just mediocre. I have no problem believing that there was a kernel of a great film somewhere there, but I didn't find it. But before it was released in the US, I know that Harvey Scissorhands spend on long time mucking it up, so I am unsure what might have been had studio interference not given us the product it did.

Watching movie on devices (yes, I've seen the David Lynch video) is necessary when you have tagged along with your wife on a business trip, and have no way of accessing Netflix on the hotel TV.

I watched part of Don't Torture a Duckling on my iPhone in an LA hotel room just a couple weeks ago because the rates for WiFi were ridiculous. It actually looked great, and didn't bother me one bit.

Just watched Devil... I know reception on this one is really mixed, so feel free to disagree with me, but I actually liked it.
To be honest, the only reason why I wanted to watch it in the first place is because I grew up with a sister who was petrified of elevators. She was always afraid of getting stuck, or plummeting down to her doom. A movie about people getting stuck in an elevator was oddly nostalgic just for that reason.

The premise wasn't all that original, the portrayal of the devil wasn't all that original, I agree with the critics on those... But I was really confused about who the hell the devil was the entire time which kept me on my toes, and I liked how everything came about full circle at the end.

I kind of wish there were more "urban horror" movies like this. Movies about things that happen in isolation can be creepy, but there's something unsettling about movies like these, at least to me... Something crazy happens in a populated area, and chaos ensues.

Just watched the other The Abandoned (the more recent one.)
That ending was absolutely awful. Way to make absolutely everything completely pointless.


I was okay with everything up until that ending. Just... So bad.

Well, I didn't really enjoy Devil at all, if I am honest, but I also pegged who the devil was at the start of the film, and it never really developed into anything enjoyable from there. I saw it a long time ago, and it was pretty forgettable, but I felt even for one of M.N.S.'s movies it was on the lower tier.

Another one to put in the NON-recommended pile is The Other Side of the Door. Seriously, absolutely nothing new or exciting here. I wouldn't recommend anyone waste their time with it. I am noticing a very odd trend of taking actors from 'hit' tv shows (Walking Dead, GoT, I am looking in your direction) and placing them in 'foreign' setting horror movies. Nothing original offered by this film, and it is a trend I am learning to be displeased with. Door was really tropey (in a bad way), suffered from inexplicable characterisations, and poor acting delivery. The was one scene in the movie that was some of the laziest and worst story writing or cutting I have seen. I would not expect much for anyone going in for watching it.

I watched Devil years ago, so I can't remember much aside from it being ok.

That being said, what I did take from it was really enjoying the opening sequence with the inverted cityscape. Nothing too radical, but unnerving anyway.

I also liked the movie posters for it. The down button for a "V" and the seeping light from the elevator into an inverted cross were both clever.

Just saw Berbarian Sound Studio. Very reminiscent of 70s/80s Italian horror, especially Argento. However, I really disliked the ending.

So after my third watch of the VVitch it got me thinking. I’m obsessed with this movie, and I think it may have actually cracked my top 10. So being a lover of lists I thought it was time to update mine. I know everyone posts mostly about the recent crap they’ve taken a chance on but I’m really curious to see what movies you like from the genre. The ones that keep you coming back. I’ll go first, these are the ones I LOVE, doesn’t necessarily reflect quality, just my enjoyment of them. Although looking at it, they're all pretty quality.
