Re: so are we watching Egypt?
that was before 24 hour a day news channels existed...
now news has become entertainment, for lack of a better word.

Re: so are we watching Egypt?
Are they ready for "democracy", if it leads to another Iran? That would be a disaster. Other players will not allow that.
Odd there is little happening in Saudi Arabia yet. If the "revolution" moves forward, they will shit their robes. You can bet they are scrambling to help a transition in Egypt from one iron hand to another.

Re: so are we watching Egypt?
I'm watching Egypt, so far BBC has the best coverage. CNN and Fox are focused on snow today. I really don't have high hopes for whatever government replaces the Egyptian and Tunisian ones, especially if religious elements are involved.

Re: so are we watching Egypt?
As an 'educated' society, we claim that we learn from history, yet we continually deal with corrupt and abusive governments as long as they scratch our backs, and then we act all surprised when the masses bring down those governments.

The Grateful Dead played Egypt in '78, at the pyramids, during a total lunar eclipse. These are the kids today.

Re: so are we watching Egypt?
It seems the Muslim Brotherhood are the ones on the front lines helping the protesters out. Not sure that's such a great thing.

Re: so are we watching Egypt?
http://english.aljazeera.net/Always has the best coverage of anything going on in the Middle East and even for the rest of the world, they have solid coverage. Lots of ex-BBC journos. Roger wrote: I really don't have high hopes for whatever government replaces the Egyptian and Tunisian ones, especially if religious elements are involved. greg wrote: It seems the Muslim Brotherhood are the ones on the front lines helping the protesters out. Not sure that's such a great thing. Considering that from the start, 10 days ago, the crowds have been non secular and making a point of it, I don't think there's too much to get uppity about. True that the Muslim Brotherhood, may have an inflammatory name, but my understanding is that they are moderate and have the best of intentions. Beyond that, don't forget just how much Christianity works into US politics and policy decision making. Bang the separation of church and state drum as loud as you want, no one's hearing it. But I don't want to bog this thread down with that debate. The crazy shit was when the Army swapped sides and refused to shoot the protesters. Which was followed by 6? days of peaceful protest, people refusing to leave and more and more showing up. Until yesterday when the President sent in thugs to kick the shit out of people. The images of molotovs, literally raining down on the crowd was pretty shocking. This all reminds me of 1871, the Paris Commune, when Paris became an autonomous state for a few months. The Franco Prussian War was nearing it's end, but when Paris kicked off, Germany freaked out and helped to lay siege to the city, in fear of revolution fever spreading into their borders. Much like what's happening now, Tunisa, Egypt, Jordan, and rumours of Yemen. Jordon acted pro-actively and dropped their government as a precaution. All very exciting times.

Just wait and see all the Contractor owned "pain rays", micro spy drones, and camps they've got planned for us when we've finally had enough. (Ooops too late.)
The Hypocrisy is so thick you can cut it.

Paulkaiju wrote: The Hypocrisy is so thick you can cut it. One thing that has really stood out to me has been how (at least on the Beeb) they are calling the protesters "The Opposition." The choice of word immediately shows how the protests, again as opposed to riots, are being viewed and how they want them perceived. Been saying today that the Egyptian state TV has been reporting that there are Israeli spies pretending to be foreign journos, adding to the problem that the journalists are already having. Al Jazeera in particular is getting arrested and harassed, but a BBC guy was arrested, handcuffed and blindfolded earlier today.
