Toshihiro Uchihira (内平俊浩) is an artist who "captures time" (it says here)
by creating life-size sculptures of young women clad in contemporary clothes
using camphor, cherry, & other woods.

He has an exhibition upcoming at Gallery Natsuka, Ginza, April 18-30.
These pics are from previous exhibitions:

Thank you for sharing this. I wish I could attend, as it looks like an interesting exhibit. I like the casualness of his sculptures, and he seems to have captured the clothing and "attitude" of todays young ladies. If you by chance you do stop in at the exhibit, I hope you will sneak in some photos and post them here. It would be extra fun to pose your toys next to the sculptures and photograph them

I don't think 'scary' suitably describes what that is

I never know what to expect when I click into one of Alice's threads.
Well, all I can expect is the unexpected.

Are people really into these? They seem extremely choppy...even for something chiseled. I'm not that impressed.

I like them because they remind me of the wood sculptures created by outsider folk artists. They exhibit a roughness like that of the carvings of Minnie Adkins
http://www.anntowergallery.com/artist_adkins.htm
(the possum sculpture with the little babies hanging off of the tail are adorable)
Might not be for everyone's taste, but the texture adds to the interest and the charm, and conceptually, he's captured what girls in japan look like today :) . The expressions and the postures are nicely rendered in wood--very casual, not at all stiff. You half expect them to come alive and ask you if you want to dance with them :) .
P.S. Alice, I like them too :P ! The soft dolls in the Ueno video, however, are a bit too spooky for me though  .
