Re: Game of Thrones
Yeah and the brothers were dead tired, the weather was miserable, and Craster wasn't allowing most of them shelter from the rain... Liked that one better in the book. Actually, I thought that first episode was way too crowded. My wife, who hasn't read the books and hasn't watched the first series since last year, was completely lost.
I hope they won't try and have a scene with every single character in every single episode. Clutter, clutter...

Re: Game of Thrones
I keep hearing good things about this show and Homeland. How is the pacing of Game of Thrones?
Is it worth buying the first season?

Re: GOT, I bought it on blu ray and it's an awesome box set. I'm not sure where your pacing standards sit but as far as I'm concerned the pacing on the show is more than fine. Lots of dialogue yes but great dialogue and steady pacing all along.

Re: Game of Thrones
Yeah, I thought the pacing in season 1 was just fine as well. I think the set was $35 on Amazon too. Totally worth it.

I enjoyed the first episode...but I'm a little concerned that Dinklage's performance might get a little too self-aware now that he's gotten such an ass-kissing over the part. Could end up being a little silly.

I think Ned's execution was what totally hooked me. I was pretty much hooked from the get go, but when Ned was killed it really hit me like "Oh, it's gonna be like THAT!?!" Creating good, strong characters and then killing them off? And early on in the books? I think it gives the stories that much more strength and interest. I haven't seen the show, so I can't compare it to BB. But I got a little tired of BB after a few seasons.

Re: Game of Thrones
Ned was the moral compass of GoT, so far. Shane was the moral destruction of WD. BB everyone is a hypocrite about thier morals.
The boys died in Venture Borthers (14 times?).

Re: Game of Thrones
I plowed through the first season on DVD (I don't splurge on cable) and thought it was amazing. Excellent production values. Lots of sex and violence and political intrigue. Along with being unafraid of killing characters off. So much going on that you have to really focus, similar to The Wire, as opposed to much of teepee..
Better than Breaking Bad? Unsure. I lost my cable when that was in the second season so I'm revisiting that on DVD.
Now I have to wait a year or so for season 2 but the benefit is no commercials, the director/writer voiceovers and the ability to "rewind" or turn on subtitles when the dialog is murky and difficult to understand.
SEASON 1 SPOILER I have a grumpy old friend who wrote off the series based on the first episode cause to paraphrase him " the surfer dude pushed bran out a window with a quip. That they're barbarians yet they talk in lofty language. That they walk around with swords and armor indoors.
I rewatched it and I think he's insane. Sucks to be him. Then again, this guy thought Batman Begins sucked cause Batman bends a gun barrel early on.
He did recommend "Rome" so I might check that out next.

Re: Game of Thrones
Being without cable actually has it's advantages. I often arrive at a show sometimes 2-3 seasons in and have to do marathon sessions to catch up. I actually enjoy this though because with so much to watch it's like sensory overload. It also better prepares you for current events, as everything that happened is still pretty fresh in your mind.
My sis recommended this show to me and even prefaced it with "they aren't afraid to kill off main characters to keep the story moving" and still I dismissed it as some 2nd rate hobbit show best suited for the CW. Glad out of boredom I finally came around and was immediately sucked in.

Re: Game of Thrones
Finally caught up with the last episode. Loved the Tyrion lines... I enjoy how they deal with the battle scenes too. Not shown, and we know it's mostly because of budget, but it's done in a manner that makes it seem natural. SMALL SPOILER Now, I don't know what they'll do with that big battle that may or may not be coming up. Interviews hinted that that's what they were saving their FX money for... END OF SMALL SPOILER
(Oh and we tried Rome but quit after a few episodes. Thought it was taking itself a bit too seriously...)
