Man, I sold MANY of my X-men figures (most of which I re-bought later on eBay) in garage sales as a kid. $2 each or so. Thought I was making money.

I've found the Maxx toy at a comic shop near by. I look at it every time, but never take it down to purchase.

Oh, and add the Sega Nomad to the list...

I think it was just able to play Sega Genesis cartridges. And you were able to hook up to the TV via AV output.

Oh alright, I think there was one that could do what I said. Can't be sure of that though since I never saw one in real life. But I remember wanting it.

TurboExrpess, the portable version of Turbographx-16. I had one with the TV tuner. It was pretty bad ass for its time, long before Nintendo put out a 16 bit color portable. I sold it with its box and games for like $700 like 10 years ago, wish I hadn't.

Yeah I wanted that preeeety hard. I wanted the Turbo Graffix when it first hit too. Mind you EVERY. SINGLE. VIDEO. GAME. SYSTEM I ever owned I had to buy on my own. As a 9 year old I had to find a way to make/save hundreds of dollars to be lucky enough to own a system. My older brother had the NES, he had to do the same thing, and I had to do it for the Genesis. So the thought of "wanting" a game system was so difficult to me. It included meticulously planning how to make $5 or less at a time for weeks and weeks and months and months until MAYBE I had enough and NOT buying anything else and then that system better have come with a game or else I couldn't afford a game for like a month or more.

Finally, fiiiiiiiiiiiinally the Turbo Graffix went down to INSANE low prices (I didn't know they were gonna stop making games and it was obsolete, I was damned kid.) I only half of what it cost though and assumed they'd sell out SUPER fast at the Toys R Us so I had to cheat my younger sister into giving me the other half and act like it was OUR system (she never played it.) But I wanted the portable too. I never got it, it was way outa my league.

Dude! My aunt had this! I always wondered where she got it. It was like a perfect arcade port. Still in awe of it. I need to try to find one!

I was more of a Galaxian man.

Ryan Phillips, I think, had one of these up at summer camp. Goofy how it kept us indoors all those hours. Probably missed lanyard weaving more than once because of it.

Post Re: What was your 'grail' as a kid?
I can't remember anything that, as a kid, haunted my dreams for it's unattainability... and that's probably because I was pretty spoiled now that I look back on it. Plus my dad has always been a collector, so we had fun collecting comics, cards, and toys together once I caught the bug.

I remember I had every Monster In My Pocket from the first series... but could never land a damn Windigo. Fucking elusive beast. He was never in any of the window-boxes, even the big sets, which made it tough. We stopped buying the blind boxes at that point because I just kept accumulating duplicates. One day after our usual walk through KB Toys, my dad pointed out a little green glob in the parking lot, which I thought was some Wrigleys or something and didn't think twice. But my dad insisted I check it out... and there it fucking was. A Windigo.

Years later, as to not create any impression of theft on a young mind, my dad told me that he fingered through a bunch of the blind boxes while I was in another isle... finally found a Windigo... and then pulled the parking-lot-trick to make me feel like I found him. Still got him to this day too.

I'm pretty sure one of these is sitting in a closet at my granny's place...

This. This was one amazing toy. I still have it, with some armor missing but still. So good.

These were mine:

It took me a year+ of good behavior and grades to score them all.

Also, any military, star wars and star trek micro machines.

Mego super heroes and other action figures (Star Trek, Planet of the Apes), and similar non-Mego figures like Bulletman. My neighbor had these, and I used to love playing with these. My parents never bought me any. Not sure why. I did have a few similar figures like Pulsar (with blood pumping action) and Maskatron (from 6 million dollar man). Great stuff.

I forgot a huge one... one that actually got me into Kaiju in the first place.

Anyone remember the Superhuman Samurai Syber-Squad?

My parents always got me weird shit.
If I wanted Optimus Prime they'd get me Soundwave...He-Man they'd get Skeletor. So almost all my toys were baddies which made playtime very confusing.
I think they were criminal masterminds.

As a kid I would scrape up as much loose change as I could to occasionaly pick up a Corgi.

Even though I collected those I had no material grail as we were poor peoples.

My real grail was travel and going to Komodo Island. Took a while but grails are possible.

^ That's funny - I was thinking of mentioning that exact toy - silver Corgi DB5 with the spinners. I've long been wanting to upgrade mine (acquired from my cousin who had this as a kid). What a fantastic toy.

^ thank you SoS for bringing back this memory. I didn't own one, but I thought this James Bond car was the coolest thing on the planet. aside from the spinners, it had machine guns that popped out front, the ejection seat out the sun roof...license plate that rotated.... ummmmm what else? such an awesome toy...

I still don't own the grail I held as a kid which was the set of Popy Go Rangers die-cast motorcycles. Been looking for a complete set in good condition off and on for a while.

I completely forgot about this toy until you mentioned it here. That thing was so cool... and I thought I was so weird for having it. I can't believe this.. I had the gold version that came with OddJob!

Ditto on the Corgi Bond Aston Martin. I had one of those. It had all the cool features and I played with it till it fell apart. There was a gold version too but it was before my time.

That is such a nice story. My parents were not so fun or creative, though they did buy me lots of things.
