Never heard of Art Basel. Sounds rad though!

Would be so perfect to go considering that I have family in Miami too.

I managed to make it this weekend. Dragged the family. I didn't see any fellow boardies, though I doubt I would recognize any. But it was a killer time. I basically stayed in the Wynwood Art District the whole time. The whole city was a madhouse, and traffic was insane trying to get anywhere. Events were happening everywhere, and the streets were filled with people. I never even made it to Miami Beach, but I didn't plan to go to the convention center anyway (the main hub for Art Basel, but admission was big $$$$).

The Wynwood Art District was taken over by street artists. The whole area is dominated by warehouses, and most have been converted into artists' galleries. So every gallery was open and filled with works. But the outdoors were where this festival shined. Artists were painting almost every wall and garage door in sight. Block after block, building after building, you just saw amazing paintings. An unbelievable experience, especially since much of it was still being created. Ladders and scaffolds were everywhere. Gazers filled the streets. Drive-by videographers cruised slowly by. I took a ton of pics. Here is a sampling of the artwork, but these don't do the scene justice (and these were taken with my camera phone). To actually stand there and see this in all directions is wild. I've also attached a link to a news story on it where you can get a better sense of the festival, although this story focused on a small area known as Wynwood Walls within the district.

Its all about your perspective: legal graffiti/art mural, sellout/making a living.

But that legal mural stuff, is egotripping! Graffiti as an art form on trains, is soo true too how art should be, that legal "graffiti" is actualy working against the culture and working for the counter culture.
It will always be there for us too look at, even when art miami lost interest, and moved on too the next "big" thing.
Making money, well how much money do you need?
You need too buy a car? a flat? Money money money my ass!
This spring I went on a middle east tour, and one time I was painting (in beirut) a huge piece, in broad daylight, by a 8 track super highway, with soldiers with machine guns around me.
You know why I did that? Too spread the word of freedom!
Too make a difrence, in the world.
Difrences does not happen in art miami, they happen in normal peoples lives.
And no I don't owe a car or a flat, im free! Don't have tv or computer or facebook either.

So did your vandalism lead to more freedom for the people? Does all art have to be political or risky? But then again, how can you argue with someone who says "F art" in general or looks down on people for making money?

As a side note, no one said that all of the exterior wall murals at Art Basel were "graffiti".
