^ YES! I was just whining to Steve about this a few months ago - I bought a VHS of it off of the band's AV guy back in the nineties, and played it literally hundreds of times for people... until the tape finally disappeared from my life. I've been trying to track down another copy ever since, always hoping that it would land on YouTube one day.

Thank you so much for posting this. Month is made.

New movie is totally fucking enjoyable. Very, very satisfying. 8)
That is all.

saw it twice tonight and my palette has been cleansed of episodes I, II AND III

plenty of things to nit pick, but that leads to suffering.

^THIS :D :D :D :D :D

And not only is my palate cleansed, but there's also a HUGE BONUS for me as a parent of a 3-yo: as far as I can tell right now, this negates any quandary I would face in 3 or 4 years about what order to show my daughter the movies in, which versions,* etc. Proceeding from A New Hope to this, I don't see ANY NEED to even include the prequels. No sullying experience of the SW universe for her. YESSSS. Beautiful.

*Well, of course we'll show 4 - 6 in their Despecialized versions.

I'm old, don't drink and I don't see why either
This comming from the guy that saw ESB 21 times when it came out.

Saw it last night at our small independent brew n' view and had a blast! No bans on costumes or make believe weapons and they where throwing out these shirts with X-Wings blowing up a AMC Death Star.

Got to a record store around 1:30 to pick up Force Awakens OST, only two copies were left sitting on the shelves - gotta love Montréal!
It's a good clear neoclasical score. Williams is showing his infuences more than ever (Prokofiev / Shostakovitch) Unfortunately, there is not so much in terms of memorable themes
like say, Dune Sea Of Tatooine/Jawa Sandcrawler or Asteroid Field. Going to dissect it in the next few days : )

So I just caught it myself. Lots of thoughts, but trying not to stew on it too much. You can always nitpick things, and especially for a die-hard fan like me. But, yeah, all around a fairly good showing, and I enjoyed it for the most part even in the tiny, rubbish, half-full local theatre I saw it in. Would definitely be interested in giving it a re-watch in full cinema (and fandom) experience.

I do think people are being overly generous with their praise, though. The movie had some serious flaws, let's be honest. And given the unlimited budget and incredible time and resources they threw at this (re)launch, I am sort of surprised. Yes, I am willing to overlook a lot, but I think a lot of this just comes from the prequelse setting the bar so low. Unbelievably low.

Warning.

Major plot spoiler follows.

OH. MY. WOOKIEE. I can't believe it was Kevin Spacey all along!!!

Many more thoughts, but I'll contain the rest of my old man gripes. For now.

I loved that the old Han/Chewie chemistry worked so well. Loved that Harrison Ford embraced the role with gusto. There was none of that "Return of the Jedi" feeling of "this is tired and I can't wait for it to be over" from any of the actors at all. Very smart of J.J. & co to just drop you into the story without worrying about answering every little potential question.

Is this heresy?: I think Kylo Ren is far more interesting than Darth Vader. What a great job by Adam Driver!

I could go on and on but as of this posting it's still too soon and don't want to get into observations and musings that might be spoilers for some ... maybe in a couple of weeks we can hash stuff out in detail.

There was no cosplay at the showing I attended but the audience was full of hipster/Skullbrainer-types to be sure, except for the row of well-behaved young kids sitting next to me (who seemed completely engrossed.) Before the film started some dude went around handing out SW character stickers to everyone in the the theater, very fanboi-esque but in a good way. First time in memory that I've seen an entire audience sit through the complete end credits, many still seated, awestruck or talking excitedly even after the house lights came up.

The long wait was well worth it. Can't wait to see it again. Oh, and if you haven't yet, I'd say 3D is recommended, at least once.

loved it, loved it. Lots to chew on, plenty to nitpick, but loved it all the same.

I'm waiting for a Luggabeast toy to hit the shelves... Surely there has to be one in the works???

Re: Sick of Star Wars

So I guess it was just me then. Seriously though, people should go out and see it either way - if only so we can get on with the discussions here!

Minor non-plot spoiler:

Did anyone else think of this during the movie? I guess it has been so ingrained in me, I just couldn't help myself. :)

So I thought I had shared this on here before, but looking through the thread I couldn't see it. Anyways, [sort of] in relative timing with the release of TFA, Canadian artist Robert Xavier Burdern has finally finished his incredible work, '20th Century Space Opera' earlier this year. While it may not be a masterpiece, or to everyone's particular taste, by the sheer scale of I think you have to admit it is impressive. Plus, to me, he really does capture the love and wonder of imagination we felt to the toys.

Anyways, the piece is 4.5 x 2.4 m, and took a year and a half (2000 studio hours) to complete, so it probably is fair to say it was a work of passion. Just thought I would post it now. I am sure that the flurry of attention the franchise is getting now is going to result in (an even bigger) blowup of SW-related and inspired artwork to come.

Incredible... this man knows the way to my heart, and I haven't bought anything SW in a long time. The inclusion of Yul Brynner and the Mattel Flash Gordon figs just seals the deal. Want one these prints badly.

Re: Sick of Star Wars

I just got back, and I actually was pretty disappointed. It was not poorly made or unenjoyable. I just thought the story was poor. If you haven't seen it, don't read the spoiler, but I will still try to keep it vague.

The movie is basically just a rehash of the originals. Not just repetition of ideas, but complete scenes and recycling of characters (and I don't mean the main characters). I don't want to spell out too much until more people had a chance to see it, but they didn't even update the designs much!
