Spoiler tags just to keep this unbiased for now.

Okay, well nice to have a second opinion. That was one of my main issues with it as well. I think the Abrams' apologists are going to have to eat a lot of their words in retrospect. But anyways, I am really trying not to go on about it too much, but will probably do a full review next week after some more people have time to give it a go.

Just out of the theater and that is exactly what I thought while watching it...
Kylo Ren is interesting thought...except the part where he takes off his mask...

I just got back, and I actually was pretty disappointed. It was not poorly made or unenjoyable. I just thought the story was poor. If you haven't seen it, don't read the spoiler, but I will still try to keep it vague.

The movie is basically just a rehash of the originals. Not just repetition of ideas, but complete scenes and recycling of characters (and I don't mean the main characters). I don't want to spell out too much until more people had a chance to see it, but they didn't even update the designs much!

Going to see it with the missus (I'm actually dumbfounded I got her to go- she hates sci fi) 10AM tomorrow at the local IMax 3D theater. It's actually been incruciating surfing the web and trying not have the movie spoiled. I think part of me wants to go just so I can be online and NOT have it ruined for me lol.

Not expecting much plot wise but I'm quite sure the visuals and sound will be stunning as usual.

Post Re: Sick of Star Wars
I got a bunch of iTunes gift cards for xmas so I decided to just get the entire digital collection package of all 6 films from iTunes (since I've been meaning to do this for what 10 years now?). Only cost me $25 out of the $90. I was actually excited to see the 3 prequels everyone hates because I haven't seen them since I went opening night for each film. I was instantly reminded how much I hated Jar Jar, and how goofy & poorly written some of the scenes were but at least they are sort of action packed and visually/ aurally stimulating. What were they thinking with some of those casting choices though?

Post Re: Sick of Star Wars
You know after watching all 6 movies over a 2 day period (and seeing the 7th in the theater this past week) I have to say although entertained none have aged well. As a kid I might have been enthralled-they seemed so ahead of their time and the toys just added to that feeling. In my early 30's with the prequels it probably was nostalgia and wanting to know what this Republic was like beforehand. I think they were epic visually, even if it was heavy CGI. But watching them sequentally time line wise the excitement just wasn't there. Even more so for the original 3 movies if you can believe. The acting has never been that great and you can see every influence Lucas ever had from old films he grew up with (i.e the Return of Jedi seen where they were going to throw Luke and Han into that creature in the sand totally has a feel of an old pirate movie- walking the plank etc). Everything going on also relates to our world events- empire are like nazis, hence the prequels relate to the Bush years with executive power abuse etc I guess since I'm much older now I get it all and it sort of ruins the fun.

I give credit to Lucas for creating the vast universe. That takes some doing, but executing that universe onto film- ehhh he did some pretty corny shit. I cringed at the creature singing in that opening of Return of the Jedi and the Ewoks- oh my so so lame! Empire Strikes Back was kind of lame after the Hoth battle. I don't know where I'm going with all this, suffice to say cool to watch every few years or so I guess but then I'm reminded of how much they all fall short.

^ For what it's worth, Lucas himself ruined what good there was in the original three films with his fussing - maybe try again if Disney makes good on the rumor of an unmolested batch of releases, or have one of us send you Harmy's fan-restored pile. They read so differently as intended.

Or just watch Time Bandits. A movie "intelligent enough for children and entertaining enough for adults," as the tagline went.

I watched Time Bandits many times when I was younger and loved it. Haven't watched it in years though. Sometimes I fear watching things I enjoyed when I was younger because the older more cynical me then goes "What was the fuss about?" and ruins the good memory.

This is a good article and sort of reflects how I feel Lucas ruined the movies:

Chris, I still have the old VHS box set without all the CGI and feel the originals still hold up. The CGI edits on those films look kind of silly and I've never been fond of them. I know some fans like them because you get more movie...but quality of quantity for me.

Hmm perhaps that's why I was sad about watching the originals. I have to admit I haven't seen the original originals since going to them in the theater as a kid. I saw the re-edited versions in the theater prior to the prequel releases. I think it's all a combination of that, my age, and the hype surrounding Star Wars ultimately that makes me less enthused. Like I said in the other thread though, even though the Force Awakens sort of was a rehash I was entertained. I hope they go very dark for the next two.

I also feel the edited versions aimed at toning down some of grotesque parts I loved.

Whenever Star Wars lets me down, I just rewatch Lynch's Dune and then I feel better. :D

^^^ GOSPEL!

I was obsessed as a kid - saw it 11 times in the theater  - and have taken another look at least once a year ever since.

This is kind of funny if you're familier with what Alejandro Jodorowsky's Dune might have been. :P

"I'm sure that David Lynch would understand that if we ever meet face to face, I'll be shouting the answers to his questions over the sound of the running chainsaw I'm wielding menacingly. It's nothing personal." -Alejandro Jodorowsky

I wish Jodorowsky's Dune had been made as well, but Lynch's adaptation would be truer to the original material of the two. Herbert himself was mostly pleased with Lynch's version. The critics and others who panned it obviously had not read the books prior to watching.

Sorry for the derail, back to Star Wars. Maybe I should start a Dune thread....

Sick of Dune. Though who remembers Dune anymore. I tried reading the books again and have to say I couldn't get past the third. I remember it picking up in the 5th, but man... So dry.

(apologies for the continuation of the derailment).

By all means I'll stop talking about it since it offends your sci-fi sensibilities. I already had, in fact.
