oh man, i hope they keep that sense of scale...lots of wide shots and atmosphere. too many frantic extreme closeups in film these days. especially with fight scenes.

Couldn't agree more. That's why it baffles me that people praise Paul Greengrass movies so much. A little bit of shaky-cam during action scenes is fine but when that's all they consist of, it seems like a real cop-out.
Judging from what little we've been shown so far, my guess is this: They're not going to cop out. Del Toro has been explicit in his desire for there to be lots of well-considered detail in this film, for at least some level of plausibility. On the other hand, I think we need to be prepared for a seriously corny movie, totally cool by me since I can only think of one kaiju movie that isn't a bit corny, being the one that started them all...

reasonable plausibility, yes please. but i expect corny from del toro, in the comic book sense. sometimes he crosses the line (hellboy 2, fer instance ), but not enough to really turn me off.
sure, i'm a cranky old guy, but i understand film theory. too many action directors don't nowadays. the big money shot at the end of joss whedon's avengers, now that's doing it right. so much going on, but you never lose track of who is doing what at any given time. brad bird's incredibles also comes to mind...
SO tired of sequences that look like they tore some manga pages out of context and used them for storyboards.

Re: Guillermo del Toro's Kaiju Vs. Robots Movie
I have high hopes as well. Got my brother to watch the trailer & he said it was cheesy..... But really, last year when I heard about this, my main worry was all the robots would look the same & all the monsters same as well... I read somewhere there are 9 different types of monsters and at least 3-5 different robots?? Also... how about the toy / figure tie in?? I have seen 3 of the robots, but no creature figures?? Guess it's still to early to reveal too much...

There have been several articles about toys and Pacific Rim merchandise, but so far all I've seen are photos of what look like sculptures of the robots, even if they're called "action figures."

ah... didn't realize Charlie Day was in it.
Looks entertaining..but my god these taglines.."Go big or Go Extinct" are so dumb.
They sure are dumb, but if they help get people in the theaters, screw it. Imagine this movie making way more than expected, It could help expose people to Kaiju that would never know what its about. Of course it comes with pros and cons. But it would still open up the possibility of more of these movies. Some crap, some great. I guess you gotta take a little of both.
I hope there will be some nice slow battles and not just fast cuts and lot of zooming action and you have no clue to whats going on except that things are exploding. How nice wouldn't it be to see some nice wrestling or karate chops going down. I guess slapping a kaiju in the face with a boat might work though.

I liked the image of the robot being transported via cables and Chinook helicopters...nice little homage. Some of these robots have a hint of a retro look to them, which is awesome.

I find the mind-meld dual control system to be kind of weird and unnecessary. But maybe they will explain it in the movie.
The mechanical design looks pretty decent. I am happy that they did not go the usual clumps-of-wire-and-chrome route. Can you imagine some of those suits released under Bandai's Super Robot Chogokin line? Mmmm... Or even retro-style Chogokins.
I know! The new trailer really shows how awesome this is going to be! I would love if someone made replica kaiju skulls, even if it was like sideshow collectables. They would be sweet to display
the more I see, the less I feel inclined to hate. But the whole 2 pilots melded thing is going to be lame, I've got $5 that says they use it to push a love story angle, which unless I get to see 2 kaiju go at it all tentacle love style, I do not need it from this movie. Thanks for sharing the trailer.

+1! ... the skull replicas would be great .... But I doubt it would happen

the poster that i helped create, http://www.impawards.com/2013/pacific_rim_ver10.html it's far from my original background matte, a lot changes once you pass it off to another art director, but it's still cool to see this one printed
