Post Metal.
I really enjoy all the recommendations and discussion on the Black Metal and Stoner/Doom threads, and have discovered some great music thanks to fellow skullbrainers ( Lunar Aurora comes to my mind immediately......wow ) I don't want to take away from those threads at all, but i'd love to have this be a place where we can share metal of all styles and genres that might not fit comfortably within the black metal / doom category.

I will get the party started.....

I am loving the new album from Havok, titled ' Unnatural Selection '. Expertly crafted old school styled thrash metal incorporating all the best elements from Exodus, Megadeth, Anthrax, Overkill, etc. with a nice polished modern feel. This album kills. Heavy rotation lately. Their first album 'Time Is Up' also shreds your face. Here's the bandcamp page for the new album...

Havok - Unnatural Selection

Also loving the new Amon Amarth album ' Deceiver Of The Gods '. Pretty much sounds like all of their stuff, which is fine by me. I was pleasantly surprised to see the dudes are looking out for their fellow old school metal Swedish countrymen, and feature the mighty Marcos Margolin of Candlemass fame on a track. Hell yes. If you like these guys at all, it's worth it to get the 4 song ep that comes with the 'special' version of this release. Each song is done in the style of their four favorite bands....Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, Motorhead, and AC/DC. The AC/DC one is hilarious....

There is a newer Finnish Death Metal band called Decaying. I love everything they have put out so far, 2 full lengths & a compilation of their first 2 demo's. If you like Asphyx or Hail of Bullets be sure to check them out.

Haven't listened to this one in a while before last night, but 12 years later I still love it just as much.

Hadn't checked these guys out, and I agree....really good stuff here. Thanks for the suggestion brooks ! I was familiar with a Turkish band called Decaying Purity ( who is also worth checking out ) Here's the bandcamp for Decaying...

Last time I bought a metal mag must have been a Hit Paraders, around 83'. I just bought Mojo mag, to get that Heavy Nuggets cd.
A couple of bands on it are worth it and as you see, I love that album cover !

Hit Parader ! Oh man....that brings back memories. I used to get that mag all the time back in the days....Circus too...and Kerrang ! Now I subscribe to Decibel and Terrorizer to keep up with new metal. I'll occasionally get a MOJO too....gotta love the free cd approach :D

Decibel is a good read and the flexi discs are a great way to hear new bands without having to buy crappy albums.

Doesnt the flexi only come in the subscription copies? Everytime my local music store gets them in there's no flexi.

^ Yep....flexi only comes with sub copies. One of the many reasons I finally became a subscriber years ago.

Been listening to metal all day today....figured i'd share a couple.

Montreal's Voivod has been a favorite of mine since I first picked up 'Killing Technology' on vinyl back in the ancient days of yore (1987)
They are the audio equivalent of war torn, future science fiction. The new album 'Target Earth' is incredible and worthy of the late, great Denis D'Amour (Piggy) whose shoes are admirably filled by Daniel Mongrain. This album also sees the return of bassist Blacky. Awesome album from start to finish.

Also found a band out of Norway called Byfrost who i'm really enjoying. They sound like later Immortal, if Immortal kept putting out records, and threw a bit more thrash in the mix perhaps. Monsterous, catchy riffage awaits....

I've also been enjoying the new Immolation, and Autopsy ( been on a death metal kick lately)
The new White Wizzard is also good. More of a traditional old school metal vibe....nice melody, high pitched vocals, and epic guitar solos :D

And just because its eternally rad....

Completely agree about Revocation....thought it was horrible. I've also been enjoying the new Lord Dying LP. Sounds like they might have listened to a bit too much High On Fire, but its done well. I also hear some Prong in there perhaps ?

I really like the new All Pigs Must Die record too...

My expectations were low because I don't really like the bands Luc took the members from for this record - I was wrong.
It may be hard to explain but I find this to be a very relaxing album!

^ The new Gorguts is a very impressive album. It might be relaxing because your brain isn't pre-occupied thinking about bills, responsibilities, etc., it's busy following the mind blowing technicality that is present. I wonder if he's throwing his hat into the ring to be a soundtrack composer ? ' The Battle Of Chamdo' sounds like it would work flawlessly as soundtrack material.

The new album from Satyricon is sounding good too....I freaking love the cover.

The last couple of years saw a lot of reissue of old local bands material on CD. Most of them never really made it out of Qc but some where very popular here.
I had never heard about Lord Ryur before I ordered the DDT comp. a few weeks ago though.
Of course you wouldn't have caught me listening to some of these bands in the 80' but time changes 8)

Now if someone could put out the Trop Feross EP out, I'd be happy !

^ Dude....that Trop Feross video is EPIC ! I would love to have a recording of their stuff from the sound of things.

I used to have that Sword record, love Dead Brain Cells, and i'm intimately familiar with Voivod, but I haven't heard the rest of those bands.....send me a flash drive :D

Being born in 1972, I would have been knee deep in this era of metal, buying everything my puny allowance would allow. Bands like Raven, Accept, Armored Saint, Grim Reaper....etc. I cherish this era of music in general. A lot of fearless experimenting going on during these times.

This week : Old dude metal + Sebadoh :D

Most reviews put Twilight of the Gods down but for what it is, I really love it. Glad it's not a Bathory tribute band like it was intended to.

Some excellent choices there. I really like the new Satyricon, and Twilight Of The Gods is on my 'to buy' list. That new Soulfly is sounding good too...how's the Pentagram ( Chile ) ? Doesn't come out in the States until November.

A couple of my recent favorites

In Solitude 'Sister' is an amazing album. Great mix of traditional metal mixed with a cult rock vibe....some sophisticated songwriting on display here. With each listen, it gets better and better. One of my top five this year.

And yes, I like symphonic death metal :D The new album from Fleshgod Apocalypse 'Labyrinth' is fantastic. Mesmerizing complexity....very impressive work. You can tell these Italians listen to a ton of classical music.

I have an assload of metal discs (I distribute) if anyone is down for trades or if you wanna buy some titles. If you're interested in a list, hit me up and I can email it to ya! All styles imaginable and mostly imports (by that I mean if you live in the US then most of these are imports) and rare stuff. Obscure bands, etc. Just throwing it out there

Into the new Skeletonwitch and Toxic Holocaust because thrash lives forever for me. Found them, downloaded them, don't care because I preordered the LPs.

Anyone here like Speedwolf? Very Motorhead-ish and awesome.
